1. Girls weren't allowed to take shop when I was in school.
And that's a shame, because I woulda _loved_ it. :hi:

4. I went to HS in the 1960s and wanted to take auto shop...
...and to play golf on the golf team. I got a huge NO on both requests. I could figure the golf team one because when we played socially ~~ me driving from the men's tees ~~ I beat each and every guy on the team. They were NOT pleased. But auto shop? I think they were afraid I could out drive them in a car, too!

2. The more we fill our lives up with complex crap
the less in touch with simplicity we become.

I'm afraid some of us do need manuals for common sense.

9. It seems like common sense is difficult to develop or learn
it seems to be something people either have or they don't.

11. I remember when a colleague told me he was reading a book about
"enjoying the moment". He found the concept amazing. I thought it was amazing that people would need to read a book to grasp this idea...that we'd need to rationalize pleasure.

7. I loved Shop! Home Ec was kind of boring. I already know most
of that stuff. I got Nine weeks of Shop and Nine weeks of Home Ec in the 7th Grade. :)

I think the other 2 nine weeks blocks were typing and Health. Not sure. Long time ago. I remember Shop though. It was fun :D

8. I wish we'd had a decent shop class at my school.
I might have figured out how much I love makin' stuff a lot sooner. :)

10. In shop, I was too terrified to do anything...
All the bullies were there.

In a room filled with heavy cutting gear and an asswipe of a teacher... (In a different class of his, I was framed for ruining some chemicals... on the plus side, he's probably dead now so I don't care.)

13. I had more fun with the band saw than
the damn bobbin and needle on a sewing machine. I really disliked home ec.

14. I wish I had gathered my thoughts before starting this thread.

I grew up on the prairie of Montana, grandson of homesteaders (1911).
They worked hard, raised a fine family of six children and sixteen grandchildren.

I was raised on a ranch/farm operated by my parents. It was hard work that my
father and mother didn't wish on their five children.
It was important for us to contribute to the operation, whether fetching the proper wrench,
bailing hay, feeding the cattle and on and on .....
We were pushed to get an education above any thing else.
The education was restricted in that we were not allowed to take shop or home ec classes.
Of the five of us, I was the only one to not receive a college degree.
I have had a remarkable career, in many shops, against my parents general wishes for my career.
This book resurrected the struggle I had with my 'shop rat career'.
So that might explain why this book made me angry.
