I had it last night.

It began with me being on a street, outside of Rosa Park's childhood home, it being a shrine and museum to her.

As I'm standing outside, one of only a few white guys there, another decides to burn it down.

I'm shocked. Appalled, in fact. But then that shock turns to fear when everyone assumes it was I who set the fire.

But it wasn't.

It was another white person.

So then I find myself running down a street because this mob is after me. I try to explain, but no one will listen.

Then I wake up.

WTF?

Because feeling guilty is taught from an early age in our culture, I can understand why many of us feel this way for various reasons. But I also think guilt is a pretty useless thing. It doesn't alter the offense from which it is summoned. Punishing oneself with guilt will not make a better world.

Regret, however, is a good thing, as we can learn from it, and do everything possible to avoid making the same mistakes over and over.
