I don't eat fish, but my uncle went deep sea fishing and brought
over lots and lots of fish. We are deep frying speckled trout. I am going to try my best to eat it.

Fish is gross. It just is. I wish wish wish that I liked it. It is healthy (not deep fried of course), but I so want to like it. I have had almost all kinds of fish. And cooked all different ways. It is just yucky. But tonight, I am eating it regardless. Even if I have to hold my nose while I chew it.

1. I thought trout was freshwater?
Have you ever had grilled salmon or tuna? Most fish isn't fishy (unless it's spoiled). Haruka and I loooove it.

Does LDKB like it?

3. You are right. They went fishing off of the coast of New Orleans.
They were in the sea some and ventured up into the river and into some swamps.

I have had both of those. I can almost like (haha) smoked salmon. I am sure delta kitten will love fish. Her daddy hasn't met a food he doesn't like, and I am the only one in my family who hates fish.

6. I got THE best garlic and pepper smoked salmon in Seattle at Pike Place
I wonder if you would like it. It's dry smoked, so the texture isn't icky.

8. I think it is the texture that gets me. And some fish tastes like
dead fish smell. That is bad fish, but most fish tastes like that to me.

I can't eat most sushi because of that, nor most tofu.

I've never had alligator, but my sister has and she says it tastes like chicken.

On edit: This is Haruka. I didn't realize LostinVA was still signed in.

19. Speckled trout are not actually trout.
They are members of the drum family, which is mostly marine. They go by a few names: speckled trout, spotted seatrout. They sort of look like trout I guess.

10. Speckled trout? Deep sea fishing?
No, he didn't catch that fish out in the open water. Speckled trout is freshwater fish.

And, I'm with you.

Fish are snakes that swim.

And, I learned from my oceanographer and marine biologist friends - none of whom eat fish - that the ocean is filthy, toxic, so the idea of fish being healthy has become a myth.

End of discussion.............

14. See my post above about the trout!
But yeah, fish are yucky. And I have them as pets, so that adds to the creep factor.

It only bears a superficial resemblance to actual trout.

22. They're not! You're right!
I always thought of those swampy areas as freshwater, but that was really sloppy thinking. Of course they're saltwater.

Nice catch. Thank you very much for the correction..........

11. There is salt water trout, they catch them in the gulf all the time.
Speckled trout are plentiful. They don't taste "fishy" to me, but some of the fish if it isn't cook properly will (flounder that is not prepared right is fishy to me).

I'm not a fan of oysters, nothing you can do to prepare them can make them taste right. They are just ick.

15. I think I would puke if I had to eat a raw oyster.
I will try almost anything. I have tried sushi. ICk. But I will never try a raw oyster or escargot.

And they did deep sea fish, but they also fished in the MS river and some swamps off of it.

Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 09:35 PM by merh
I did the raw oysters once and that was enough. It was awful.

The gulf waters that meet the river and the swamps, that flow into the bays and contain the barrier islands are brackish waters, mixture of fresh and saltwater. Depending on the rain fall here, the bay water behind my house will have a high salinity level and the dolphins will come to feed and play.

21. The problem I have with speckled trout is that their flesh is fairly soft
and easy to spoil. If they are not properly iced down immediately after being caught, they are not very good. They are not my favorite kind of fish. I like black drum a lot.

26. I am mostly a catch and release fisherman. I get icked out
cleaning fish or crab. All of these years I've fished it never occurred to me that the icing mattered. I thank you for the tip. One day I should go down to the harbor and watch as the charter boats clean their catch.

I like drum, but I like grouper better. And I really like shark but I've never prepared it. There is a secret to doing it right, I don't know the secret and if I don't know it, I won't be bothered with trying to prepare it. I will just eat it when my BIL prepares it at family gatherings.

Probably only gone around 10 times or so and out of those times there was only once that we caught a really catch. Sea bass, Taug Taug, etc.

Did you have to wrestle with a Wampaa to get it?

And I thought they smelled bad on the outside.

13. After a near miss with the Grim Reaper, I got to like fish plenty
It's a long story, but basically I have to eat a lot of fish. Luckily, my wife is
a brilliant chef and adapted quickly. Two fish kinds that are good and not at all
"fishy" if done fresh (and done right) are Ocean Perch and Atlantic Cod. There are
others, as well. I make a wicked Teriyaki tuna steak, and my wife's monkfish is nothing
short of gourmet quality.

Not only can you get used to it if you have to, but you can get to like it if it's
prepared by someone who knows what they are doing (skip the deep fried versions--
they are little better for you than a Big Mac).

I could eat cedar planked salmon, crab and lobster, halibut, and tuna every day for the rest of my life and be quite happy.

Westport, Washington. While it's fun to catch a large salmon, we catch even more sea bass which is darn good eating.

We are having trout for lunch, btw, with tomato, cucumber and avocado salad.
