I just got another rescue dog!
She's a 12 pound, 7 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier (the same breed as Eddie in the TV show Frasier). She's much calmer than most JRTs and she's incredibly sweet. I got her from my local Humane Society today. Her previous owner became too sick to take care of her. Her name was "Muffy" but I've changed it to "Lucky." My two dogs are now named "Lucky" and "Chance." I love Lucky already! (and still love Chance obviously!)

Lucky (the one I got today):

Chance (Cavalier mix I got 6 months ago):

39. I see a pair of Crime-Fighting Canine Superheroes
The Adorables. I don't know how that came into my mind except that I know how smart Jack Russells are. I think their superpower is to disarm hardened criminals with their cuteness. They are stopped in their tracks by a look from the big brown eyes and they drop their weapons and abandon their criminal activities to stop and pet them. Then I think the Jack Russell hogties them with a leash and then punches out 911 on a public phone. Or better still he removes the miscreant's phone from hs pocket and uses it to summon the cops. I think this is a comic I could enjoy.

:D

57. Lucky has a good bark but hasn't learned yet that I'm not a criminal. When I approach the house...
she'll bark furiously at me. But once I open the door and come in, she realizes it's me and stops barking and starts jumping up and down on me. It's so funny and sweet!

4. How fortunate
for you, and for them. My wife and I adopted a rescue kitten a couple of years ago. It turned out to be an undocumented Maine Coon cat (now about 23 pounds, and not fat, just a really, really, large cat). The critter has the most easy going personality - which is good because the now becoming elderly female Abyssinian cat that my wife has doted upon for years, who is now about 13 years old, is maybe 6 1/2 pounds. And he just lets her boss him around.

I hope you get as much joy from your new canine friends as we do from our feline friends.

10. I like how you worded that...The story behind their names is...
Chance's name was Kandi when I got her 6 months ago. I didn't like the name Kandi and changed it to Chance. Chance was a stray dog I got from a rescue group. She didn't know anything about being a pet. She didn't know what a dog toy was and she was scared of all other dogs and strangers. But I saw how affectionate she was with her foster mom and I felt she'd be a great pet if I gave her a *Chance*; so I named her Chance. Then today I found Lucky at the Humane Society. Her name was "Muffy" which seemed a bit too girlie for me but I wanted to pick a name that sounded similar. Muffy is 7 1/2 and has been called Muffy her whole life. So I just started trying the alphabet: Mubby, Muccy, Muddy...At first, I thought I'd pick "Muddy" but now I'm glad I didn't pick that! Then eventually I thought of the name "Lucky," which sounds close enough that she responds to it. Actually, the very first time I called her Lucky, she came right to me! I think Lucky and Chance are a great name combination!

Edited on Sun May-17-09 12:42 PM by madmom
Khaos was rescued from an over grounded shelter when he wouldn't "leave her alone", Carma was found in a ditch along the road side.

11. She definitely loves me. I'd say she and her sibbling "like" each other.
Edited on Sat May-16-09 08:43 PM by Bonn1997
The latter is going to take more time I think. But Lucky follows me around everywhere I go (even more so than Chance does). It's great having both of them. I wish Lucky was younger so that we'd have more time together but I know what really matters is the quality not just the quantity of time.

27. The name change was easy but it might vary for different dogs
Chance was a stray dog who didn't really know her name was Kandi. That's just what her name was listed as by the rescue agency. Lucky never noticed that I changed her name from Muffy. If you can pick a name that sounds similar, that will make it easier. I would look up things like "dog name change" in Google for advice, though. Also, you'll find the best dog advice and conversations you could ever get at this forum: http://www.dogforums.com/
I post there under the same name. Did you recently get a rescue dog too?

31. Thank you so very much....
Bonn1997....I just registered on the site, also with my DU name.
I also gave your name as a referral:loveya:
Yes, like you, my best girl became mine yesterday. She is still in the shelter...she'll be spayed soon. I'm off work, Friday was my last day, so will visit her daily. Her name is Kitty, and I want so very much for her to be my 'Maeve'....She was surrendered, so she's been 'Kitty' to a loving family for two years. I read her surrender papers, and she responds to her name 75% of the time, but Kitty and Maeve are perhaps too different. This is a bittersweet experience for me, and I was too emotional to post about her yesterday.
Thank you so much for the link, and your help....
We'll see about the name....Thank you for your advice...and I'll try to figure out how the site works to get other opinions also. I know you gave the best advice...it makes the best sense of it all. Although I only spent enough time there to scan and register, I know I will be a faithful user...
Heartfelt thanks...
Best wishes with your beautiful friends...unconditional love for all...

peace~

Yesterday, I called her KittyMaeve!
She came to me!
I read her surrender papers and noted that she only responded to her name 75% of the time, and she's two years old! Maybe it's because there were three cats in the house and she heard a lot of "Here, kitty kitty!" ??
I'm posting an update today before I go visit her again...she's still awaiting her vet appointment to be spayed.

30. Her age was an important factor to me because...
it was limiting her chances of adoption. The people at the shelter said that this week she was probably the most walked/played with dog but no one wanted her once they found out her age. Although it would be nice if she was younger, I feel I should have 5 to 8 wonderful years with this little girl.

I got my Esther back in September. She was five years old at the time and basically ignored by potential owners in favor of the more energetic kittens. She's a sweetheart and can be just as energetic now that she has her own place. Plus, I have the potential of 10-15 years with her.

29. Well I've got a story already.......
I gave Lucky and Chance each a dog bone treat that takes about 30 min to finish. Lucky didn't finish hers and tried to hide it by pushing it tight in the corner of the family room. She then kept using her nose and snout to push "imaginary dirt" over the treat to hide it. Really she was just rubbing her nose against my rug but I think she thought she was covering up the treat. She worked hard, doing this for a few minutes nonstop! But a few minutes later, Chance "found" the treat. So Lucky came sprinting over, put her body between the treat and Chance, and then started pushing more "imaginary dirt" over it. I guess there wasn't enough imaginary dirt the first time to fully hide the treat. These guys are so entertaining!

41. Only been 24 hrs but they're not getting along so well! :-(
Long story but basically a big fight broke out over a piece of steak at my neighbor's place. (I stopped the fight by yelling "No" and clapping my hands. Neither got hurt.) Now they've been just ignoring each other all afternoon. Now Lucky (the new one) who loved me and was very comfortable with me for the first 20 hours has become fearful of me. She jumps away when I try to pet her. I am a little concerned that getting two females (especially one terrier) wasn't the smartest idea but I think I'll just have to be patient and see what happens. I guess it's early and this is a scary time for Lucky and an adjustment for Chance.

56. Things are going a lot better!
Lucky is usually very affectionate with me, although every once in a while she's still fearful. It seems like if I move my hand too quickly to pet her, it startles her. She clearly is used to sleeping in bed with her owner. My bed is too high up for her but that doesn't stop her from occasionally trying and crashing into the side of it! I've been letting her and Chance sleep with me. Oh and Lucky walks PERFECTLY on a leash. Walking her is so much fun!

What made me really happy though was that she and Chance played with each other yesterday! It was just for about a minute but it's a nice start. I was sitting next to Chance and Lucky turned around and decided to start Licking Chance's face. It was like Lucky came out of her state of ignoring Chance and realized there's another dog in the house! Then Chance (playfully) nibbled on Lucky's paws. Then they each laid down next to each other. I made sure I gave lots of verbal reinforcement the whole time. It was so sweet! I think they'll like each other if I give it time.

Right now I'm separating them for food and whenever I leave the house. Things seem to go better that way. Hopefully someday they won't need to be separated though. I'd love the thought of them keeping each other company when I'm gone.

55. I separate them for food
Because Beag (the newer one) will try to eat Mick's food. The only reason I don't leave them alone together when we're at work is because I don't trust Beag not to chew on stuff she's not supposed to. I don't worry about them getting into bad fights or hurting the cats together, if they're unsupervised. Their fights are more just a lot of growling and snapping over rawhides.

I'll leave them alone, if I'm just working in the yard, though.

53. I'm tearing up...
In February I adopted two Great Pyrenees rescues who'd been dumped in the Game Lands in Schuykill County in PA . (I know, I know, the size differential alone with yours is very funny) and I still can 't get over how happy I am to have done it.
I had two Pyrs who died last year...and decided I needed more. These ladies are so sweet, so GRATEFUL...they know they've been rescued, somehow. Pyrs are less demonstrative, usually, than terriers and spaniels ...the kind who just sort of cock an eyebrow when you come into the room, like, "Oh, yeah, hey, glad you're home."
But these two rescues are absolutely adoring. Both heads on my lap whenever I come into the house. Very attentive very sweet. Dogs, as the commercials says, RULE.
And there are so many out there who need adopting. I'm glad for you.

61. Aww! She reminds me of my baby...
She's also small like him! Our other Jack Russell (RIP) was taller than the one I have now who is almost 8 months old. I don't know if he will get much bigger, but if he doesn't it is fine with me. They are wonderful dogs if you spend the time to train them and get their energy out.

Your cute girl is just his size- weight and looks! Here's a couple of pictures when he was about 4 months old...

63. Wow, he is ADORABLE! Have your JRTs been lapdogs?
I'm just curious how much energy you can get out of them. Mine is definitely a lapdog but that might just be because she's relatively old.

64. Oh gosh..
Bundles of energy!!! They can be calm, but it takes nothing to get them up and wanting to play again. They are extremely smart and a ton of fun. They have a ton of energy, but my jack has a backyard to play in with two other dogs, so he stays busy.
