Many ghost stories are interesting as experienced by people. Some are actually scary.

6. Here's A True Personal Ghost Story...
When I was down in South Carolina in the early 70's visiting a buddy they told me about the "Frogmore Lights". Supposedly this Civil War soldier had his head blown off at this fort on Frogmore Island and 100's of people have seen his "ghost" carrying two lanterns around looking for it.

So one night during the full moon we went out there to take a look for ourselves. We took some flashlights, a few joints and a bottle of Southern Comfort and tramped around the woods near the remnants of this old fort getting stoned and being eaten by bugs. When you're out in the woods late at night looking for a ghost every movement in the brush startles you and every weird noise you hear is just creeps you out.

Anyway, after a couple of hours of not seeing anything we decided to call it a night. As we were driving away I spotted a white form in this field in the distance (it was getting a little foggy out by this time). As we got a little closer we spotted a few more white forms moving pretty quickly from the road to the field. The next thing you know this huge bright light came out of nowhere right in the middle of the field. All at once that light turned into a burning cross, and we could see from its light that the "white forms" we saw were Klansmen and they were burning the cross in front of a church. Scariest thing I've ever seen in my life.

Sorry that may not be a good ghost story for the kids, but it really happened and your OP made me think about it.

How could he look for his head if it was gone?

7. The shortest ghost story on record:
"He awoke in darkness and wished for a match. And a match was put into his hand."

Kinda cool... B-)

9. Another one for the pile:
My father died in a car crash. His head hit the windshield of his 1970 fastback Mustang, and he died from the injury. Now, he wasn't exactly a nice and gentle man, and his passing prompted many nightmares and unpleasant thoughts in me. These nightmares continued for weeks, until one particular dream/vision in which he spoke to me and expressed sadness at having to leave this world against his will. The nightmares stopped.

Years passed. I entered adulthood, married, and had sons, one of whom, Jack, looks almost exactly like my late father. I rarely thought of my father, and certainly never dreamed of him until one night in 2000, when I awakened from a heart-pounding nightmare much like the ones I had experienced decades ago, when the death occurred. I had dreamed of my father again, and he was there in my mind, vivid and alive once more. I was shaken, but I kept the dream to myself.

The next day my youngest daughter asked me what had happened to her brother Jack. She said she saw him walk through the house late at night, with blood gushing from his forehead. She said she followed him toward the bathroom to see what had happened to him, but no one was there.

Make of that what you will.

13. She would have been around 9-10,
and I asked her lots of questions about what she saw. I didn't mention my dream until later, and now the incident is part of family lore. That's not our only "ghost story," BTW, but it is one that lends itself to a quick and creepy retelling. Most of the stories are mundane, and a couple of them quite comforting.

our grandfather died and my cousin was awakened one night by a tapping sound. she woke up, sat up in bed and our grandfather walked into her room using a cane. the tapping was the cane hitting the floor.
