The Golden Girls or Maude?
I would watch The Golden Girls with my grandma when I was really young and Maude was before my time, so I'm gonna go with The Golden Girls.

Plus, the humor was far more outlandish and not nearly as serious of a TV show.

But what about you?

1. Maude...
Even though I was pretty young.

I've never watched Golden Girls.

12. She defined Vera, didn't she?
Her talent was huge, really. But, no one else could ever have played "Maude," no one.

I was a law student in 1972, first year, when "Maude" came on, and given how shabbily we "lawyerettes" (as one professor always referred to us) were treated, it was astonishing and so comforting to see a character on TV who took no crap from anyone, man or woman, who was still a lovely woman, and who never backed down from what she thought was right.

I hope people will explore the DVD of "Maude" shows - if such a thing exists - so that they can understand what an enormous cultural and historical icon she became because of Norman Lear and that show.

She changed things. What more can we ask of artists?

Her life was successful .............................

13. A lot of stars would have taken one look at the "Abortion Episode" script....
...and said "no way -- I'll be ruined/lose sponsorships/never work in this town again" Not her.

8. 'Maude' season 1 was great, but when Florida left after season 2 it went downhill
'The Golden Girls' was consistent for its first 5 years; the final 2 were starting to run out of ideas...

Love 'em both though.

10. Rue McClanahan and Bea Arthur were both on "Maude" and "The Golden Girls"
and both were great on both shows. "Maude" was a trailblazing show, tackling hot-button issues such as abortion, at a time when things like that were scarcely talked about on TV.

11. I never saw Maude regularly because I was a teen before I got to watch
much tv. Saw it mostly in reruns. But I loved that theme song "And Then There's MAUDE!"

14. Golden Girls
What a great ensemble cast. We didn't watch Maude in our house for some reason, and I don't remember seeing it in reruns. I DO remember a couple of episodes: one where Maude was trying to get Henry Fonda to run for president, and one where she was supposed to give John Wayne hell-but didn't.

Golden Girls was a Saturday Night staple, however.
