I just witnessed a wonderful act of human kindness.
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 05:47 PM by SeattleGirl
I was walking to the store near my office, and kitty-corner to where I was, this elderly gentleman was trying to walk across the street. He was walking extremely slowly, and when the light turned green for the people sitting there, he was smack in front of the lead car.

The driver got out, and offered the gentleman his arm, and started helping him across the street. Another man, out walking his dog, went over and got the older man's other elbow, and both of them helped him get across the street. The driver then went back to his car (the light had cycled by then), but no one in that line of cars honked their horns or yelled, because they saw what he did.

The dogwalker was smaller than the elderly gentleman, and so I was going to cross the street and help, but I had to wait for the light. As I was, another driver who had been in that line at the light pulled out of line and crossed the lane, parked his vehicle, and he and the dog walker assisted the elderly gentleman over to the vehicle, so he could get a ride home.

The kindness of what I saw just really touched me.

9. If that was in Seattle, I'm not surprised.
I remember my first time in the SeaTac area (as a young soldier at Fort Lewis) I was driving around Seattle and found myself going the wrong way down one of the numerous one way streets.

This would have earned me plenty of honking horns, extended middle fingers and possibly gunshots in SoCal. Instead, all the locals just calmly pulled off to the side until I could get turned around the right direction again. The people of the Seattle Metro area rock!

11. Sure it is. I understand that.
Wish I could see stuff like that more often down this way. It happens, mind you, just not as frequently.

12. I saw a similar act of kindness recently. At the grocery store.
This elderly woman could barely walk. She asked me if I would help get her grocery cart down the little hump to the parking lot. (She would have fallen on her face!)

I said of course. Put my car in park and helped her and her grocery cart over that little downhill hump. A couple gentlemen were nearby and took her the rest of the way to her car and loaded her groceries into her trunk.

There was someone in the driving seat. I'm not sure how the rest of that came out.

16. Wonderful story SG.
As long as we continue to hear stories like that, and be involved in some of our own, there is always hope for the species.:)

17. What a heartwarming
story SeattleGirl. Thanks so much for sharing.

In my personal life, I am trying to be more tolerant and less judgmental of people. I work in a very gossipy office and when a colleague starts to talk nasty about another colleague, I do my best to temper the negativism.

Please don't crown me for sainthood yet though.

But truly, we should all show more kindness in our lives, we should all show more tolerance.

My 1-1/2 cents worth (it would be my 2 cents worth but you know, inflation and all) ;)

27. And isn't it wonderful that it does?
This is certainly not an isolated case of kindness, but there was just something about witnessing the whole thing that just really touched me.
