Poll question: Are you Susan Boyled out?
I'm a pop culture hermit and I can't do anything without bumping into something Boyle related. John Holmes in Heaven, I can't be the only one who doesn't really give a shit, am I?

1. No, but it is kinda crabby
She's been the latest "it" thing for about, what 48 hours now. It's a very short time.

The Ignore feature is wonderful for threads you find annoying. I've used it too on occasion.

2. It all would have been better...
....had not the SAME EXACT THING happened last year (or the year before) on the SAME EXACT SHOW! (I believe his name was Paul Potts).

Same thing. Common, average looking person (unlike the typical 20 something starlet/stud) walks on stage, people are all dubious, they sing a great song, Simon Cowell loves it, and it becomes an internet sensation.

Am I the only one who realizes that it was the same exact formula? Or perhaps I'm just crazy?

4. I don't intend to get too caught up in it, but I really like the fact that for once,
there's something genuine, sincere, and uplifting to celebrate. An achievement we can all feel a part of. People celebrate things like the comeback of Britney Spears, which only serves to remind us that she never was anything more than a marginally talented, emotionally mixed-up train wreck.

And here is a woman who has had none of Britney Spears' advantages in life, and has lived with mockery, disapprobation, loneliness and despair. She has an undeniable talent, and she went out there, possibly terrified and definitely out of her element, gave it her all, and made the world stand up and applaud.

I think she deserves way more than fifteen minutes. I'm happy for her, and hope she gets her wish fulfilled.

5. If she was a more conventional version of "attractive" you'd never hear of her.
It was simply someone's conscious decision to NOT give her a makeover and a nice dress prior to putting her on stage... in a way, isn't all the fawning sort of "reverse looksism" if such a thing exists?

"Oh look, the homely lady has a beautiful voice! Who would expect that?"

15. Most of the most talented people I know are ugly-ass mofos
It's almost a stereotype. The "good looking" usually have vocal coaches, electronic enhancement and/or play to backing tapes in order to sound as good as the uggos.

It's very rare you find physically attractive people with natural talent that does not need to be coached/coaxed into the world. Unfortunately the entertainment industry covers this up.

8. Susan Boyle is on the receiving end of a lot of projection.
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 01:38 PM by MilesColtrane
She's a fine amateur singer who's been packaged by the producers of the show as some kind of earth shattering talent.

It shows just how fucked the music industry is when the entire world freaks out because they've never seen a normal looking person with a good voice.

17. +1 exactly what I tried to say upthread
I'm a semi-pro musician, and most of the exceptionally talented people I've encountered are all average to below-average looking. And interestingly enough, the ones that tend to look the most conventionally attractive tend to be of average or below average talent.

22. she hasn't been packaged at all yet
It's a clip on youtube. The furor is grassroots in origin and that furor has alerted MSM. There are so many things about the story that make the experience an artistic and emotional one for everyone I have sent it to, some pretty crusty types too. But I guess this is the avant-garde of cool that comes around to say that what intrigues me is...over. I'm not done, thank you.

"Ignore" is your friend.

25. I think you've got it backward.
She appeared on a TV show that's watched by over ten million people, before she became a YouTube hit.

The producers of this show knew exactly what they had in her and pushed all the right buttons in their audience. Pavlov would have been proud.

Whoever said she's "over" is wrong. She'll probably go on to have a decent career as a minor broadway show singer. (by that, I mean she won't be cast as the lead in most shows)

All I'm saying is that if you played a CD of her performance to someone without them knowing her back story, they probably wouldn't get nearly so worked up about how amazing she is.

32. so what?
It's the whole experience that has grabbed me and apparently some millions of other people and I am entitled to my reactions including the pleasure I take in sharing the experience. It's the story , the singing, the song itself and the sharing all together that I celebrate. Incidentally I don't think people were saying that she was over; they were saying that they were over the hoopla.(I am old enough to have seen the same sequence with Elvis and The Beatles. It may seem now that everyone fell under their spell but, no, there were tons of very vocal people who dismissed the public response and disparaged the artists relentlessly. Some of them were quite funny). And then comes the disparagement of the group response and the application of a 'purity test' to establish that there is something either not genuine or not worthy about it all. People come with context ...it's hard to imagine that they could avoid it or that we would want them to. Succeeding in the business is never just about the vocal cords it is about the whole package including stage presence and command and wow that was, among many other things, unexpected and unquestionable command of the stage. She had us at the first not and held right on and she still has my attention and will for a while yet. There is no point in trying to separate out one piece of the whole and saying well now, that doesn't seem so special now, does it? Because the whole is always going to be there.
