1. 1d12 moments of silence.
R.I.P. to the mostly unsung D&D god.

And Gygax passed only six months ago or so. I guess it's the end of an era.

I think all the sub-literate crap that came our after 2nd Edition probably pushed them more quickly than they otherwise would have gone... :P

17. Gary brought back simpler roleplaying with his
Lejendary Adventures books a few years ago, and then gradually wrote stuff for Troll Lord Games' Castles and Crusades, which he deemed the true successor to OD&D in spirit (that is, if you like contemporary style mixed with the classic). People still play and discuss the classics: http://odd74.proboards.com/index.cgi and Kenzer & Co.'s Hackmaster plays like 1st edition. Arneson was also still doing Blackmoor stuff until recently.

20. Eh?
I found AD&D to be far more convoluted and unbalanced than 3rd ed. I like fourth ed as well, though it is an even bigger departure than 3rd from what I grew up playing. And there is no denying that the production values have skyrocketed.

6. And even the clerics couldn't save him this time.
Sad.

D&D was such a huge part of my early life.

8. As I understand it, no wishes in 4th ed.
One of the many reasons the new edition blows.

9. That explains it: my involvement with D&D began and ended with the 2nd edition
I've retired my portfolio of characters...

10. Damn. All the old schoolers from Lake Geneva are dying off.
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 02:01 PM by TheMightyFavog
Very sad.

Maybe with the passing of Gygax and Arneson, maybe the State of Wisconsin will give serious thought to placing the place in Lake Geneva where D&D was invented on the State Register of Historic Places.

At the very least they should move GenCon back to Milwaukee where it belongs. (fuck Indianapolis!)

13. the city of milwaukee
really fucked the puppy with losing gencon. that was GOLD for all the bars, restaurants, and hotels when gencon rolled into town.

best as i can recall, the city didn't want to get down and co-operate with a plan that would have allowed the congoers to get a bus pass for the duration of the con. other stories i heard include the bleatings and screaming of the fundies about the "game of satan"

my guess it was a combination of those and a plethora of other factors.

but FFS why indianapolis... they are the northern colony of the bible belt.

11. I used to go to a hobby store he frequented here in St Paul (he lived in town)
I used to always hear stories about Arneson and his campaigns. That sucks.

It was usually other guys at the store who knew him, and played in his campaign on occasion. :(

ETA: I heard on the news there will be a memorial for him locally. I also found out that he lived just down the road from me. Crazy.
