Poll question: What kind of grocery store do you shop in?
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 09:12 PM by rurallib
I am just kind of curious. We do some in a small 1960s type grocery and some in the co-op. Mostly it is the 1960s style grocery

1. Usually a large store like Superfresh, but there's a smaller
store up the road that I stop in for snacks.

2. My little town has two choices, Safeway and wallyworld.
I try to keep to Safeway and it is a full service one - deli, bakery, pharmacy, flowers although the deli sure isn't as nice as a few I have been in in Phx and Tucson lately. I want an olive bar wwhhaaaaa:nopity:

3. Big box -- but it's not what you think
First, it's all of one block from me. Second, it's a Japanese-owned store, called, of course, Don Quijote. Honest. They bought it from the more appropriately named Daiei a couple of years ago. Before that it was called "Holiday Mart", and they may well have originated the big-box concept, which works nicely in a place where 95 percent of the stuff gets shipped in in great big containers.

We also had a big-box office supply store called Fisher Hawaii years and years before any of the mainland chains. I'm still half convinced that someone went to Fisher while he was out here on business, saw the cavernous aisles, and said to himself, "You know, if I took this and built one out by the bypass back home, gussied it up a little bit, and gave it a catchy name like, oh I don't know, 'Staples' or something..."

5. I feared many would substitute "Walmart" for big box in the choices
There are many varieties of 'big box' in this country besides Wally.
Meijer, and Target come immediately to mind.

4. I go all over
within a three mile radius from my home, with priority to the very small ethnic produce market, then fill in with another larger market, then aldis, then costco or chain stores (but not walmart). The little market has very overpriced milk and no meats or baileys or coffee, but I try to give them as much business as possible.

8. There is no one grocery store that can serve us.
Our tastes are too wide, from Native American, to African, to Middle Eastern, European, Indian, South East Asian, Tibetan, Schezwan , Cantonese, Korean, Japanese...

There is only one place where we can find Schezwan peppercorns

There is only one place where we can find Persian dried lemons

There is only one place where we can find Mexican paddle cactus

There is only one place where we can find Russian Baltica beer

And so it goes...

9. I also shop at Sunflower farmer's market
But I only go there if I need a quick gallon of milk or something that is on sale. You don't want to do ALL your shopping there, it will wipe out your grocery budget.
