6. Don't forget...
BE YOURSELF!

Put your best foot forward, of course, but above all, don't put on a front!

This from a guy who blew 4 job interviews before saying "to hell with it, I'm just gonna be me."

The next one was a score!

10. I've just come from two days of interviewing people
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 05:42 PM by LuLu550
for a job opening here.
Smile, repeat people's names when they are introduced and try to say something nice. Know something about the place you are going to. Prepare questions to ask them at the end that show you have done your homework. Send a thank-you note or e-mail after the interview.

Don't :puke: on them.

Oh, yeah, don't babble on and on...don't talk too loudly for the room you are in.

I'm serious, you couldn't be talking to a better person...we've interviewed 13 people over two 9 hour days. I know what was turning us off by the second half of the first day!

11. Q: 'Tell me about yourself'
Edited on Tue Mar-09-04 05:40 PM by legin
Get the first couple of sentences prepared then it will flow.

i.e. you won't do the breathing fish impersonation like I did in a practice session a while ago.

They are going to ask you that question, probably at the beginning, I hate this question.

14. Also "What is your biggest weakness?"
I had it even tougher at a previous job interview where they asked what my current superviser would consider three of my biggest weaknesses. I think that I failed because I could only come up with two that I was willing to say and talk about.

22. Haha! The perfect answer for that trap
(think... think...) "I tend to be a workaholic because I get so passionate about what I'm doing & have to pay special attention to maintaining a healthy work/life balance."

Works everytime.

Luckily, I didn't get any of those questions.

As fate would have it, the guy in charge of the group is somebody I worked with 13 years ago. He was there, and kept talking about how good I was then. That was a nice surprise.

Are you coming to the march on the 20th? (No news on that other thing I had talked to you about but that's our group ;) ) If you come to the march, we'll have a blast. We usually go out for long drinks and talks afterwards.

12. Man I know the feeling...
the hardest parts for me are never the questions, never the "what would you do here? Are you confident about this?"

The hardest parts to be prepared for are what they spring on you, timed typing tests, handwriting tests, testing your ability to quickly and neatly fill-out a balance sheet, or your ability to design a webpage within a limited period of time.

Pass it and you're the one who gets the job, flunk it for whatever reason and NEXT!!!

17. Mmmmm ... the meanie ones
One of what you might call my employment tutors, when he was employing a secratary at a place that he worked at, when he was interviewing he would have someone call through to the telephone at the desk he was sitting at. He would let it ring. The interviewee who reached over the desk, picked up the phone, and said "Mr xxx is involved in a meeting at the moment, can I take a message", got the job.

Dubious.
