I'm obsessed with dogs, but neither of my parents will let me get one. It makes me so angry. Their the cutest damn things ever.

I really want either a dachsund, or a basset hound.

go to the shelter and get a dog that otherwise becomes moo goo gai pan or a science experiment at the university. they're just as easy to love and love you double what you love it.

I've loved every one and sleep with Charlie every night and the only advise I can give is.

Don't do it! Listen to mom and dad.

Imagine you're the addict about to try Heroin for the first time but your folks are there to save you from a life of cleaning up crap and barf, short vacations worrying about the kennel and the eventual final trip to the Vet. Repugs can handle that ok, but not a loving Democrat.

Enjoy a cat if you must but unless the entire family is really ready for the commitment don't force a dog on them. Most of all because it will be their dog in the end, thats the way of the world.

We had two litters last year (different bitches), 9 in each. The best bit is, people pay more than 1000 bucks for each pups, to pet homes, show homes are even better. Woohoo.

I wish you could have a puppy - puppies are great and even more
wonderful when they grow up. We lost our girl, Max, who a fourteen
year old cocker spaniel last month and it was dreadful. Shortly
afterward we were watching the dog show, as we always do just for
the entertainment. However, a certain dog caught our eye. A rare
hound breed called a PBGV, related to the Bassett but looks entirely
different. They absolutely do not look like a pedigree. They have
very messy hair, great faces and are known as happy hounds, also
with a mind of their own, so I expect we will have our hands full.
I understand they are very vocal, being hounds, so if it fits her
personality we may call her Gabby.

Anyway, we are picking our new girl up tomorrow and we're so excited.
I wish I could share tomorrow and the weeks that come with you.
When your able, do get a dog.

PBGV's come from France. No level headed conservative would ever
have one I'm sure.

And don't get me wrong - he's cute. I love him a lot.

But let me tell you they are a lot of work. Be prepared, if you get one, to make a huge sacrifice of your free time, to be able to wake up in early hours to take him out, to be able to occupy him all of his waking hours. Also, they are very stubborn, and are hard to teach commands and make them go to the bathroom. Wherever he sleeps, make sure it's far away from you, cause unless you don't mind whining, it gets annoying at 3 am.

Edit after reading above posts: Yeah, there are behavior changes that one must adopt with dogs in general & dachshunds in particular. I have another dog, an Anatolian shepherd. And a cat. Both are very low maintenance and very very loving. Lucky Dog has calmed alot over the last few months, but he suffers from separation trauma when I leave the house - so he used to tear up stuff. Now he just pulls a bit o' stuffing from the Stinky Pillow (his dog-bed-thingee). And he ALWAYS is completely contrite. He ALWAYS says..."I can't HELLLLLP it." And he can't. And much more importantly - he is completely devoted, and he has a COMPLETELY indominable spirit. Lucky Dog is an embodiment of some sort of small primal-spirit-life-force...

and it's difficult to teach them Chemistry or physics, most importantly I don't know if they can be accepted into Law School or Medical College!

11. I have a puppy.

He's seven years old. But, he's still a puppy. He came from Tibetan pet rescue at age one. But, he's still a puppy.

He jumped on the bed last week and got tangled in the bed linens...and, he dislocated his right hip. :-(

He had to have surgery, too!

Today, he is recuperating. He usually gets 2 good walks a day. But, he hasn't had a walk in over a week! It will probably be another 3 weeks before he can venture out.

Anyway, he is a puppy. He will always be a puppy. And, I will always love him.

she was lost in a snowstorm 11 years ago. She was hungry, wet, and cold.

We gave her our home, our love, and named her Tipper. And now she still has as much energy as she did when Clinton became President...:hug:

We had some puppies during my childhood. I always think I want one now, but then I think about how much work they are.

I'm happy just living vicariously through other peoples' ownership of puppies, so please get one and post lots of pics!

Well, sort of. I grew up in a wonderful dog family. We always had 1-3 dogs and it was great. But I thought cats were cool too and my parents were dead set against it. One day, I'm at a friend's house and there's this tiny kitten that wasn't being taken care of by her mommy so I took him home.

I was 16 at the time and had the drama queen thing going so I trumped up an elaborate sob story on how pathetic this little kitty's life had been and how I really needed to take care of him. First I asked for just 3 days to prove I could be responsible, then I asked for 2 weeks, then 3, until I busted my butt proving their life wouldn't be turned upside down just by having a cat in the house. They gave in.

So why are your parents dead set against the idea of having a dog?
