Question for those who survived the 70's - How did people do that much coke?
I watch countless shows and videos from the 70's and 80's, with each person more coked out than the next. Some of it is fucking brilliant (David Bowie Thin White Duke Tour) and some of it is horrible (KISS The Elder Tour).

But I seriously wonder - how can any person do THAT MUCH COKE???

All parties mentioned above were seriously doing the Peruvian Marching Powder. Bowie drove himself psychotic from his coke, and KISS went into seclusion after that album.

I've done Coke. It's 'one helluva drug', but it will KEEL you, as I understood after doing an entire 8-ball to myself one night in the late 80's with some South African Afrikanner Refugees one night. That shit will kill you, laughing all the way to the grave.

So how can someone like Bowie, Bob Ezrin, Gene Simmons, Bryan Ferry, The Police, etc... do that much coke and SURVIVE?

I just don't get it...

2. If everybody did as much coke as they purportedly did
they'd all be dead.

Sure, they did a lot of coke, but not nearly as much as they (or others) said they did. They also did a lot of downers in the 70s as well (Quaaludes and heroin were huge back then).

5. True - Bowie said he did Coke like "most people drink tea or coffee"
If that were the case, he would be dead

Then again, Bowie has said he doesn't remember things as they happened, but as "he would have wished them to have happened"

7. It was probably cut a lot and they all got new noses and new livers.
Remember all the jokes about Linda Ronstadt and her new nose? Look at David Crosby and his new liver. I do think that all that baby laxative the coke was cut with probably destroyed their sense of smell--that would certainly account for some of the new perfumes out these days.

In truth, I don't think we were any more chemical then than we are now--expect our drugs have changed. I was at a party just a while back and everybody was talking about their beta blockers and ARB's. This was the SAME crowd that used to be discussing their trips and their downers while sucking on a joint...

Whether that was Bob Ezrin and Ace Frehley or Bob Ezrin and Gene Simmons or Bob Ezrin and Paul Stanley...

21. True, he did "The Wall"
And keep in mind some great works have been conceived under the influence of the stuff...

But I have a hard time believing the rest of the band did not partake, even if Gene Simmons abstained.

13. coke is a seriously good drug.
never made enough money to truly indulge but it only takes a few bumps to understand the appeal.

seems most lived but are still physically affected. I read an article about the Eagles and coke. Glenn Frye has a piece of plastic for a septum, and Don Henleys still has back problems. and Stevie Nicks says she stopped coz a doctor told her if her septum collapsed it could cause an anurism and says her voice is still affected by damaged septum.

I lived in Miami and could get it easily. I as doing about a gram a week. And it was cheap, only $150 for a gram. I was addicted. In 1098, I moved up here to the Atlanta area where I didn't know anyone to buy it from, so I quit cold turkey. Good thing because my nose was becoming burnt out. There is no way that I would even try a line today. I have high blood pressure and it would probably kill me.

23. $150? And that's not inflation-adjusted?
Nowadays, at least where I come from, a gram runs you about $40, maybe $60 for the really good stuff. Still out of my usual price range, though.

22. Really?
The time I pushed myself to my "coke edge" was around 1988. I was dating this girl who was the daughter of Afrikkaners. Her parents were serious coke fiends, as was she and her brother. Granted, they were all really rich and connected - things were kind of strange back then.

Anyway, she (from her parent's stash) brought out a nice rock of the stuff. After going through an 8-ball of the stuff, my heart was racing and then - poof! it would skip - and then keep beating. This kept going on for about an hour. It freaked me out - and I haven't done coke since.

27. I was in high school in 1979 to 1984. I never heard of anyone using coke though I admit I didn't
hang with a druggy crowd. All I ever saw or did (maybe 5 times) was hash or grass. That is it.

29. You mix it with heroin and do speedballs
You last a lot longer that way because you avoid the sharp high and crash down.

Of course, you then end up with a double addiction but that's a problem to be faced down the road.
