Would a 6 year old like Pirates of Penzance?
Next week, there is a local production of "Pirates of Penzance" happening here, and I think it might be a nice short outing for the family, but is Pirates something a six year old would like and understand? Is it appropriate for children even?

Thanks

1. Yours would. She's a smart cookie.
I think she'd enjoy the music and the costumes at the very least.

2. No.
Not unless the actors actually dress up like pirates with eye patches, parrots, peglegs, and swords.

4. I saw it when I was about 9 or 10
And I loved it.

I obviously didn't "get" it, but I enjoyed the music and the costumes and the spectacle of the whole thing.

8. Depends on the 6 year old.

One of mine would have had a ball, one would probably have tolerated it well enough and the third would have made life miserable for all.

9. Exposure to live stage production will make a lasting impression
Would a six year old understand what is going on? Probably not
Would a six year old like what is going on? Absolutely

My parents made sure I was exposed to it, and I grew to love it. We had season tickets to the civic light opera in San Francisco all through grammar and junior high school. Once a month, during the season, we would get dressed up, have a meal in a nice restaurant, then attend the theater. It was cool and I grew to know and love all the Broadway music. I regret I didn't get to see much Gilbert and Sullivan until later in life.

12. Maybe you should see if the library has a record or CD

of "Pirates," play it for her and explain the story in advance. My dad was a big G&S fan and I could sing most of their songs when I was 4, thought they were great because my dad made it fun, explained what was funny. I'd have loved to see a production.

16. Depends on the kid....
My parents took me to see every Gilbert & Sullivan production that was put on when I was pretty young. I saw Pirates, HMS Pinafore, Iolanthe, and The Mikado.

Personally, I LOVED them- even as a kid. But I was very into music of all types even from a young age. No, I didn't "get" all of the jokes, but it didn't matter at the time.

Of course, years down the road, coming out as a gay man... Liked musical theatre as a kid??? Yeah, it all tracks back, doesn't it?

17. tell her the story ahead of time
Because it is nearly incomprehensible to many people at first. The costumes and the music will be captivating, but nothing will make sense unless you give her a very brief story line.

Pirates is not as accessible as Mikado or Pinafore, IMO.

18. Dear little buttercup I saw it when I was about 11 and thought it was great.
I think younger kids follow the story less and focus in on the costumes and such. Give it a try.

20. I'd go for it.
If its a repeat of the one I saw when I was about that age, at least she'll get a good laugh when the main character's pants accidentally rip onstage... :P

I know, I know, that wasn't in the script. Just an accident. But it was damn funny. :)
