Is this a form of revenge?
I recently "friended" a person I used to go to high school with. She sent me a request because we had some friends in common and I accepted it for the same reason.

Now, that woman has sent me messages apologizing for some mean things she and a friend of hers apparently did to me in middle school and high school. But here is the thing: I have no recollection of the things she did and, in fact, I barely remember her at all. I have even less recollection of the friend she mentions as her co-conspirator.

I was the "injured party," yet, I live my life completely unscathed by the events she mentioned. Yet, this woman feels bad 30 years later for whatever it was she did.

I made sure she knew that I did not remember the things she is seeking forgiveness for-- and that none of it matters to me in the least. I hope it made her feel better.

It also occurs to me that this is a form of revenge. Here is a former middle-school bully who has been haunted, to some degree, by her actions for decades. She apparently injured herself much more than she injured me. If that was not the case, I certainly would have remembered her better. There is a lesson here.

1. That's a really great observation, Lucky
I believe you're right, and that's got to be a comfort to all those who were bullied in school (I can put myself on that list, in fact).

Karma, baby--it takes care of assholes so we don't have to.

2. A few years ago I ran into a former bully
at a store I was working at. Frankly even though she did make my life miserable at the time, I hadn't thought of her in ages..yet when she ran into me she couldn't apologize enough to me about how she treated me. I think your observation is spot on in many cases.

3. Sounds like she matured and regretted things done as a child.
Good for her. Some stay mean forever.

4. No, that's just an example of someone who eventually developed empathy /
a conscience.

Many never do.

5. Revenge would be if you beheaded her and burned her house down.
Her apologizing to you is simply apologizing and repenting.

Sounds like she has indeed been haunted by former bullying asshole ways. That speaks well of her.
