Has Anyone Read Any of These Books?
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 07:51 PM by The Lone Liberal
Work has been pressing of late, but the mail continues to run and there is now a stack of books waiting to be read. Has anyone read any of these books? If so, would you please be so kind as to give me a hint if they are worth the time. The pile is so large that the task of reading seems rather intimating.

The List:

World on Fire, Amy Chua, from the cover it would seem that this is an examination of globalization.

The Winner-Take-All Society, Robert H. Hrank, Why the few at the top get so much more than the rest of us.

Elite Deviance, David R. Simon, why the elite do what they do and don’t think it wrong.

The Book on Bush, Eric Alterman and Mark Green, thesis is that Bush lies…?

Luxury Fever, Robert H. Frank, a book about the rich consuming and everyone else trying to keep up?

Choosing the Right Pond, Robert H. Frank, why we give a rat’s ass about the rich and famous?

Silent Theft, David Bollier, how the elite is going to own everything, including the air we breathe?

The Cheating Culture, David Callahan, how we have devised two moral compass, one for our personal life and one for our business life. The one for our business life is pretty shady. I am reading this just want to mention and recommend.

Of those, other than The Cheating Culture, have you read and would you recommend.

1. Luxury Fever sounds interesting.
Haven't read it, but have the feeling someone may recommend it. That is one BIG stack of books you have there.

BTW, "Bush lies" and a question mark (?) should not be in the same sentence.

4. Whoa, I have a stack of unread Bush books too, and none of those is on it!
I can't keep up.

I did order the new Eric Alterman book, but at the time, even though it had an availability date, it didn't have a title. It was listed as "A Book on Bush" on Books In Print or whatever my bookseller was using, but I think its final title was something different.

5. In France...
Many years ago... the people rose up and threw down the aristocracy.

It also happened in Russia.

A lot of other places too.

It will happen again.. you cannot tax everyone all the time and have them not fight you.

6. From the introduction of Silent Theft
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 08:01 PM by The Lone Liberal

An English Folk Poem, circa 1764

They hang the man and flog the woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
But let the greater villain loose
That steals the common from the goose

The Law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who take things that are yours and mine

The poor and wretched don’t escape
If they conspire the law to break
This must be so but they endure
Those who conspire to make the law

That law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
And geese will still a common lack
Till they go and steal it back.
