Mind Blowing Assertion about "The Departed"

I know I'm all over the place tonight here, probably trying to distract myself from reality.

On Wiki, there is an analysis of the "themes" of Scorsese's "The Departed", and one of them has to do with the inability of the "bad guys" to father children.

The essay comes to the conclusion that Billy (DiCaprio) rather than Sullivan (Matt Damon) impregnates Sullivan's girlfriend.

This is what I can't understand: If Sullivan KNOWS he is impotent, how can he even believe that he is the father of the child???

When the character played by Vera Farmiga shows Sullivan the sonagram of the baby, he is surprised but appears to accept this as a fact, that he is the father. And why does Farmiga show it to him and pretend along with him that he could possibly be the father? Isn't this just a huge charade?

Is this analysis, that Billy is actually the father of the baby, valid, in your opinion?

It is an interesting hypothetical, for sure, but it strains credulity, in my opinion.

1. I don't remember Billy actually sleeping with the shrink. I thought it was platonic

so how could he impregnate her? I also thought that Sullivan wasn't impotent, just at times distracted or not in the mood. This sounds a little too formulaic, like the writer was trying to fit too much of the movie into his/her theory.
