Poll question: Best "Based on History" Movie
What is the best movie based on history, either loosely or to the letter?

I love this genre of movies. Makes you want to go out and invent a time machine to travel back and see the times and places with your own eyes

2. Yo...
When it says "Other...please specify" please tell us what you think is the best of this genre. I would like to hear some opinions so I can come up with a list of recommended movies to watch.

3. One Man's Hero
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 01:33 AM by sugarcookie
The hubby and I just watched it. It is based on the San Patricios, Mexico's Fighting Irish. It stars Tom Berenger and Joaquim de Almeida. Even the background music was amazing. I have started doing some research on the Saint Patrick's Brigade to see how close the movie is to actual events.

BTW, tonight I went to IMDB to check out the User Comments for this movie. This statement was in one of the summary lines:

Left-Wing Hollywood and the Liberals Will Love It!

This movie will be on the Western Channel and Flix this month.

4. Kelly's Heroes.......
Because who knew a movie about stealing something during a war with the aid of the enemy would ever come true. Bush would have to be the character that Don Rickles played, because he didn't really know a whole lot about the army but was very well connected with alot of people. (In other words, an idiot with lots of friends in high places). ;-)

21. I heartily agree
That was one of the best movies ever. And the actor who played RFK should've won an oscar.

7. One of my favorites has always been
``Sink the Bismarck!'' (1960-British) Kenneth More, Dana Wynter. It used to be on a lot late at night. This one was supposed to be pterry factual. I used to watch WWII movies on TV with my dad, so got to like them.:-)

9. For quality, maybe Lawrence of Arabia. For accuracy, try
Return of Martin Guirre.

And just to add to your list: Danton (starring Gerard Depardieu), though I don't know if it's out. Also, the old I Claudius series was great. Others have already been mentioned.

10. "The Longest Day"
The book by Cornelius Ryan is much better, but the movie is quite good too. It's about D-Day, for those wondering.

:-)

15. Well, even this movie has to gloss over a lot.
It gives the British and several American viewpoints.

I'd go check out the book, if you're big into history. It delves deep into the events immediately preceeding D-Day, during the day, and just after. It's a long book, but it's interesting. But then, I'm a history geek! :-)

19. Yeah, I'm big into WWII
From age 10-12, we lived near Pearl Harbor. I've been to the Memorial a couple of times. A very humbling place. So, with all that history right there, I got into WWII. I even had the Avalon Hill WWII games.

Oh, yeah, my mom is Japanese and lived through the war; so she has some interesting insights.

If I thought I could make a living at it, I'd have majored in History. As it is, I minored in it. I think I have 18 semester hours of history.

What are the avalon hill games? The new games are so fun and you get an appreciation of the guys from it. Seeing Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan man that nearly made me wanna cry all the dead and blood the chaos. I also loved Band of Brothers. I enjoyed a Bridge Too Far and Enemy at the Gates, I loved the Great Escape.

24. Avalon Hill is a maker of historical games.
They make "Axis&Allies" for example.

They had board games back when I was a kid based on various historical wars. They are still around, but their selection isn't as varied.

11. I was divided between Ryan and Gangs of NYC
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 07:22 AM by JohnKleeb
I loved them both equally. SPR is more likely to make me teary eyed but GONY makes me teary eyed too seeing how Catholics were treated. I hate to sound like a cynic but there will always be an oppressed minority we have to make it a goal to stop this and realize that we are all minorities in some way or the other. I know this sounds odd but I think thats so. Think about it. I am a minority most of the country is Protestant and I am Catholic. Some minorities suffer more than others I will admit.

13. There was a "Religious Right" in the 19th Century
They eventually accomplished The Prohibition and quotas on immigration from "Southern and Eastern Europe"--Italy, Poland and the Slavic nations--where the Catholic immigrants came from. It just occurred to me, they probably hated Polish and Russian Jews, also.

You forgot they hated the Irish too. The Irish were the exception of Western Europe being Catholic and being mostly blue collar they were much like the Eastern and Southern Europeans.

22. Das Boot. Peterson really id his homework on that one.
Even if after the movie came out, some vets wrote a book titled "No! It was not So!"
Their beef was that they did not scream or whimper when the depth charges came...
