13. We had a similar problem in our house for a while.
Edited on Sun Jan-04-09 09:10 PM by leftyclimber
We're a "noncustodial" family, so we only see SO's son every other weekend. When SO's son was about 8 we fixed that particular complaint with the pronunciation that this is not a restaurant, and that if he didn't like what we made, he could fix himself a sandwich. Six years later, it seems to be working. Not very many sandwiches made at this point, either.

My mom (two parent family; she just did most of the cooking) had the same rule with me and my brother.

We also have the rule that SO Jr. has to take one bite of everything on his plate without complaining. We stole that one from my aunt.

I don't know how old SPK Jr. is but if you can find some age-appropriate way to involve him in the cooking process he might decide that his food tastes better because he had a hand in making it.

edit: total brain fart.

15. Anytime I make them I drain ALL of the water out of the pot they were boiling
in...then add a packet and a half of the seasoning they provide ( this is going on the assumption you have made two packs, not one ) I sprinkle the seasoning in there and just mix it up....not hard at all.

I don't like the soup consistency of it, that's why I do it dry

17. Some people boil the noodles along with the flavor packet
and some people drain the water, then add the flavoring.

Whatever you're doing now, SPK, try the opposite. It might be what SPK Jr. is more accustomed to. :)

Me, I can't eat that stuff because MSG gives me a raging migraine. I was over the moon when I found some vegan MSG-free ramen in the clearance section at my grocery store. Yahoo! :bounce:

67. That's how you know where your tolerance level is
When you get hiccups, its hot. The "rooster" sauce don't do that for me anymore. Gotta go to the habanero level at least. Then there's the "Dave's Insanity Sauce" which actually makes you stop breathing if you use too much. Now that shit is lethal!

I asked his mother

she uses less water

I let it boil down, but less water may be the answer

yes back patting is cute, don't know if its devious, it could be, but I think he is just so into not upsetting anyone and I feel bad about that because I know he is in the middle of a difficult situation with divorce.

40. About Mom's Cooking...
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 02:20 AM by Jamastiene
Those people (this is not exclusive to men) who love their mother's cooking will ALWAYS do that to you. Nine times out of ten, it has NOTHING to do with your cooking. You could cozy up to his mother and watch for the chance to come up where he asks for Ramen Noodles again. You cook them, let his mother say she did it and he'll love them.

I know this because my grandmother knew how to make stuff taste great. I have tried her exact recipes and it never tastes as good as how she did it.

Ramen noodles is not something that can be improved by the addition of chocolate, ergo is can be improved with the addition of bacon and/or cheese.

Some crispy bacon and parmesan sounds good. :-)

Although I bet if I opened up a booth at the Minnesota State Fair and began selling deep-fried ramen noodles (on a stick) dipped in Hershey's, I'd probably make a mint!

to make things, like ramen noodles, for himself. Just no really sharpe knives and no using the stove without supervision.

And try to think of new dishes that you both can enjoy cooking together. You're not gonna win the "mom does it better" argument. And you don't have to. He will have to adjust that mom does some things well and dad does other things well. And he will. :-)
