The best tex mex
I'm on vacation in Texas and of course I had to sample some real Tex-Mex. After visiting many restaurants you may be surprised by my favorite.

The Chili's in San Antonio has the best Tex Mex in the world. I had sizzling fajitas and a nacho appetizer. The best I ever had! I know, I know, it's a chain. But this was one was really different than the other Chilis restaurants. Do yourself a favor and try it some time. The special head chef was on duty. I think his name is Jose.

I also went to some fort in San Antonio but I can't remember what it's called. There was a super cool Ripley's wax museum across the street. San Antonio is a fantastic town!

1. I think I ate at the Olive Garden near there - Guiseppe was the head chef!
Amazing cornflake breaded veal parmegiana!

5. This "fort" in San Antonio?
Was it downtown? Did it look like a two-story Taco Bell? Were there a lot of people taking pictures?:hide:

Edited on Fri Jan-02-09 01:08 AM by kentauros
You mean The Alamo? Because it was originally a mission ;)

Come to Houston for TexMex and especially Mex-Mex. THE place for that is Pico's Mex-Mex.

Or just use The Houston Press's Tex-Mex food guide for the best picks :)

20. Tex-Mex at a chain restaurant?
Edited on Fri Jan-02-09 07:56 AM by hobbit709
I have about a dozen little hole in the wall joints within 5 minutes of me in South Austin that on their worst day are 10 times better than the pseudo Tex-Mex at Chili's. Rule number one in my book-if you don't see any ethnics eating at a ethnic restaurant, don't eat there.

24. You can stumble around SA
and trip over better Tex-Mex places than CHILI'S!

The only restaurant (Taqueria Aguascalientes) within two miles of my house has better Tex-Mex.

There are several better places near the "fort".

Which Chili's? If you don't mind my asking.

I guess you could go to Taco Cabana if you were feeling uppity.

Okay, I get the joke, very funny. :)

In San Antonio, you really need to go to Mi Tierra, which is in La Villita, not far from the Riverwalk. It is a sight to behold. Plus the cabrito there is just great. Everything I had was great.

43. Taco Cabana - McAllen Texas
I've been to San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and lived in Houston, and the Rio Grande Valley.

They all have great Tex-Mex food. But they pale in comparison to Taco Cabana.

You have no idea what you're missing.

that was awesome! We were in town for the Sun Bowl and I only remember it being west of town and about a mile south of the highway. Needless to say, we were the only tourists. The only reason we knew about it was through a friend who grew up there.
