Let me get this straight...on a gas stove, the broiler is in the BOTTOM DRAWER?
I've lived in this house for a year and a half, and it's my first gas stove. I thought I didn't have a broiler. Then I started Googling and called a local appliance store. I found the schematic:

...and apparently that bottom part...what's in the drawer...is my broiler.

Learn something new every day. Now I need to figure out how to use it.

1. don't do what I did
Last Thanksgiving we had a turkey roasting bag blow up in the oven of the gas range. The juices overflowed, ran down into the broiler and onto the kitchen floor. The house filled with smoke. Etc.

We haven't been able to use the oven since, to say nothing of that broiler. It's impossible to get at the parts to clean them, because they don't come out and the broiler is on the floor!

Luckily, we have a second kitchen in the house, in a former MIL apartment. So we use that oven.

But what were they thinking in design?

2. I always thought that's where the broiler was
I have an electric stove now and looked in the bottom and didn't see anything and didn't think I had one

my mom always had gas stoves with the broiler in the bottom

3. We have a Maytag gas stove & oven and the broiler is not in
the drawer. It's in the oven, just like an electric.

Our previous gas stove had the broiler in the drawer.

4. Depends on the model of stove.
I got a new gas oven a couple years ago. The old gas oven had the broiler in the bottom compartment, like every other one I'd ever seen. The new one (Kenmore)broils on the top shelf of the main compartment and the lower compartment is a 'warming area' or some such thing.

5. I've had a few ovens like that.
Thankfully the one I have now is the kind where you broil on the top rack, so the bottome drawer actually IS a drawer. :)

8. I nearly toasted the cat in a bottom drawer broiler!
I was going to broil some chicken breasts. I took the broiler pan out, put the chicken in, turned on the broiler and then opened the broiler door and voila! my cat walked out. Had I been a good cook, I would have preheated.

Just thinking about it 10 years later gives me the heebies.
