is it my imagination or have apples become less flavorful over the years?

1. It's the varieties grown for storage and transport rather than flavor.

If you can get local, seasonal fruit it tastes a million times better. Any fruit.

2. If you're buying the poorly-named "Red Delicious," probably. If

you're buying locally grown goodness, like Honeycrisps here in Minnesota, or something like a Haralson, you can still get some really tasty fruit.

I've eaten up all the local apples I bought in the fall. I'm struggling to find something acceptable at the grocery store. Used to be my favorite fruit but now most of them taste nasty to me.

6. Best tasting apples IMO are a relatively new cross-breed: Honey Crisp

Honeycrisp is a cross between Macoun and Honeygold, which itself is a cross between Golden Delicious and Haralson!

And Haralsons make the best pies. But the so called "Delicious" apples aren't. They're bland and mushy.

12. Most store bought apples are not even ripe

Over the years apple growers have found mutations that allow red skin on an unripe apple. So they are plucked early before they are ripe. So you are eating unripe apples.

Honeycrisp, as mentioned above, are the way to go. Also the Jazz apple is a fine apple and are around longer than Honeycrisps (I still have 5 Honeycrisps left).
