"Good Times" season 2 had James using the N-word and there was some meaning behind it (he was arguing with the parents of JJ's date, who were wealthy... a powerful scene to be sure). Season 3 had him saying the N-word and it was only for lame comedic effect (the way John Amos said it, I don't think he wanted to say it either and the whole scene seemed nonsensical anyway).
The way S&S used the N-word in that scene, it comes across like a South Park stereotype too. Granted, Redd Foxx's delivery makes it funny, but it's a real tightrope to have walked...
I recall an episode of the Jeffersons that dealt with racism as well...
The word got tossed, but rarely was any thought put behind its use, because it was just funnier to watch a black guy say it. :( What were the writers at CBS thinking of at the time...
