Funkiest groove by a white band/guy?
And Average White Band doesn't count, because they advertise their whiteness and are really damn funky.

Bob James also doesn't count, due to the number of songs sampled by hip hop artists.

My vote goes to:

Hall and Oates - "I can't go for that"

That Tom Tom Club riff gets sampled by everyone.

I know the x-cutioners sampled it & I think Public Enemy did recently too.

just for starters

King Crimson's caan be strangely funky sometimes too, especially after Fripp recreated them with Belew

30. This could be a winner....
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 05:12 PM by GumboYaYa
Rocco Prestia is a funk god on Bass and that horn section can not be matched. Damn good choice....

For a modern funk experience by white folks, try Galactic or Garage A Trois. Galactic is a New Orleans style funk band in the tradition of the Funky Meters. Garage a Trois is experimental jazz, funk, electronica band, that you must hear to believe.

HOWEVER, the single funkiest white person alive is Jon Cleary of Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. Jon was a studio musician for years and only recently broke out with a solo career. He has played with many of the greats of R&B, Blues and Funk. This is the only correct answer to this question and anyone who disagrees has simply not heard Mr. Cleary play.

46. Thanks for the recommendations
Anyone who likes TOP likes my kinda music.

Rocco almost died a couple of years ago. One of the fans put together a fund raising drive, and we raised $150K for a new liver. The doctors were impressed enough with our feeling for Rocco that they bumped (you should pardon the expression) him up on the list. He's TCB now with his new liver. Garibaldi's been back with the band for about 5 years now. The rhythm section rules.

That is awesome that you guys raised that much money. I participate in a group that raises money for indigent musicians' healthcare here in Missouri. It's amazing how many great musicians live in total poverty. In New Orleans they have created an insurance fund for the local musicians that is funded with money from the city and private donations.

Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 05:21 PM by dolo amber
the title is "What You Won't Do For Love" although the part that always stuck out in my mind is "I came back to let you know....got a thing for you, and I can't let it go".

OK.

So anyway, after YEARS of searching (w/o knowing the title) in stores for Bill Withers, Al Jarreau et. al, I find out it's this dude:

Bobby Caldwell?! :wtf: (Wasn't he like a Righteous Bro or something?)

Now granted, it's not the living end of funk or anything, but it's definitely right at home on any "smooth jazz" station. Decent song, GREAT voice.

Just my 2 pence. ;)
