Would someone please help me make n avatar?

I'm completely flummoxed about how to get something that looks like the picture I'm trying to make into an avatar, my photoshop skills are not up to the task! :(

How'd you do that? Honestly, I feel like such a dork always having to ask in the Lounge for someone to make me an avatar. I'm the kind of gal who wants to change my av and sig line pretty often, but I'm just too inept at making these things. Plus--and this is the part that kills me--I make these images, my photohop program says they're less than 3KB and in the 48x48 range, but when I try to upload them, it tells me it's too large an image. AAARGH!!

So if you want to share your trade secrets, post them here and I promise I'll never tell another soul how you work your magic, KW!

4. I opened it in Photoshop Elements

Then I cropped it very close to the edges of the actual image. Then I resized it down to 45 by 48 (it ended up this way because of the aspect ratio).

Then I saved it, checked the file size and uploaded it to Photobucket!

5. OK, so that's what I do, too.

Right down to using Photoshop elements. What resolution do you use?

6. For digital I usually use 72 pixels per inch

I did not have to change anything in your file other than the dimensions of it though. It was not a large file apparently.
