OK - Your opinion of the three greatest beers known to man
Edited on Sat Dec-06-08 07:38 PM by Taverner
Mine?

In no particular order

Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye

Just a Beautiful beer. The rye and hops combine to make this a floral, bitter, heavy, yet refreshing beer. It is heaven.

Russian River Pliny the Elder

Dank like a fresh bong hit. Bitter like a morning cup of coffee. Spicy like Thai or Cambodian food. This stuff is it.

Southern Tier Un*Earthly Imperial IPA

Talk about nectar in a bottle, this stuff has all of the citrus flavors and goes down smooth like velvet.

1. I don't buy much beer any more.
I like what I brew better than anything I buy.

2. Yeah - I would be that way if I brewed
But I'm not sure I would like the man hours involved.

Its not like brewers just plant a seed, wait a few months and then just smoke it :smoke:

6. A typical brew day is about five hours.
That nets us ten gallons. A few weeks in the fermenter and a few more in bottles and you've got beer. It's quite gratifying.

28. You'd love it.
Especially since you already appreciate good beer.

3. I'm drinking a pretty good beer right now.
Fat Tire. It's a beer brewed in Chicago.

Nice, smooth taste.

Not that Chicago doesn't brew amazing beers

(Three Floyds, Goose Island, Flossmoor Station)

5. Whoops!
You're right. My bad.

Goose Island is a fine Chicago beer. I like Fat Tire a lot, though.

11. My problems with actual Belgians is they degrade in their transport to here
Take for example Chouffe Houblon - excellent if fresh. But most of the bottles we get is pure skunk from those green bottles.

Then take something that's nearly the same recipe, but brewed in San Diego - Le Freak by Green Flash. All of the hops, all of the Belgian yeasty madness, none of the degredation.

And at Green Flash they know what they are doing. One of the brewers spent some time as a monk at Orval in Belgium just learning the skills.

29. I would suggest that you're drinking the wrong belgians.
Never buy anything in green glass. It's easily skunked by light.
Try the Trappists: Achel, Chimay, Koningshoeven (the Netherlands), Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, and Westvleteren.

15. Three great winter seasonals - get 'em while you can.

Snow Cap Ale

A rich, full-bodied winter warmer crafted in the British tradition of holiday beers. This deep mahogany colored brew balances complex fruit flavors with a refreshingly smooth texture, making Snow Cap a highly drinkable and desirable cold weather companion.

Holiday favorites like turkey and ham

Frambozen begins with the aroma of fresh red raspberries, followed by the ripe seductiveness of a fruity brown ale with depth and delicate malt notes. It is deep ruby in color, with flavors just as rich. Every year, New Belgium sends a delegate to the Pacific Northwest to oversee the process of turning freshly picked berries into a pure juice to be added in fermentation. The coming of Thanksgiving at New Belgium is ushered in with the first sighting of our cellar operators scuttling about, covered head to tow in a festive crimson berry wash.

(usually I don't like fruit flavored beers, but this one works. Probably because it tastes more like "beer with a hint of berry" than "fruit with a hint of beer".)

And this just in..... It seems that RedHook Brewery has brought back an old favorite for a limited release:

It's been off the market since about 2000, and very much missed. Beer and coffee all in one? Why the Hell not. At the risk of committing beer blasphemy, I have to say I used to like this stuff better than Guinness back in the day.

I haven't had the Frambozen - but I did have their other Winter offering (2 Below) and it was a standup ESB.

Check this out - ABV: 8.0% ABW: 6.4% IBU: 75

Its insanely good though. It like downing hops with shot of grain alcohol..lol.

I know this particular brew is seasonal and is just about gone so I may have to buy a four pack soon (they only sell these in 4).

32. Never had any of those as they are Yank beers
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 07:14 AM by Thankfully_in_Britai
My own 3 favourites are as follows

Hop Back Entire Stout
Fat Cat Honey Ale
Farmers Ales A Drop of Nelson's Blood

I must warn you that 2 of those breweries are very small. The Honey Ale is only available in 4 pubs in East Anglia for instance. However, they are all magnificent. Other favourites include Railway Tavern Bladderwrack Stout, Jennings World's Biggest Liar, Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and Art Brewery I-Beer

This is what you get for asking a CAMRA member!
