I hope I didn't fuck up. My computer is quieter now. That's good. Right?

I took my computer all apart and cleaned all the cobwebs and gunk out of it. I even took the fan off the CPU and cleaned that. It's running better than it has in a long time now.

The problem is the CPU temperature is 50 degrees Celsius at rest and averaging around 61 degrees Celsius when I open Runescape. If I did it right, the specs say 67.7 is the maximum and I should be ok, right?

I downloaded SpeedFan and it is telling me it's hot even though it is running better than it has in almost a year. I'm conf-ru-sed(confused). :shrug:

How badly have I fucked up?

1. If you put the fan back on correctly it should be okay.

And you need to be certain you actually plugged the fan back in. It's probably okay, since if it weren't running your motherboard would already be toast...

6. I used Q Tips and paper towels and the vacuum cleaner.

Taking the fan off the case was easy. I used my little wrist grounding thingy when I took the fan off the CPU, just in case. My canned air is running out. I need to get some more. It would not have gotten so bad if I had splurged and bought some more of that sooner.

The fan started running higher and higher until there was this whining noise and I looked on the side closest to the window. There is about a foot of space between that side and the window and it's kind of in the corner, so I never really look there so much. It had a lot of dust over the ventilation holes. That's when I decided it was time to clean it.

When I opened it up, it had quite a bit of dust on the fan blades. Just vacuuming didn't get it all. That's when I broke out the screwdriver and started taking fans off and cleaning them by hand.

11. Sounds like you're cool but there are some good brand/hardware

specific tech support sites to use as sounding boards out there... but you need to make sure it's a good one. Good luck.

I replaced a drive correctly (after my daughter caught the power cable on her leg, slamming it on the tile floor) but then I screwed up and after having to do it again, no such luck. Different scenario, clearly. I was not equipped to do what I did, and the worst part of it is - I knew it. But computers are a lot hardier than I ever thought they were! : )

You might want to double check, just to make sure there isn't a problem that isn't apparent at this point. Dust and ick are not good for machines, so you probably did the right thing. Different computers run at different temps. This new laptop I have runs very hot.

12. Sounds like the adventure I had with my laptop.

Laptops are a lot harder to take apart and put together - lots of very delicate components, little tiny screws, and so on.

But a friend of mine who's more knowledgeable than I helped me do some a necessary tuneup on my laptop. One of the hinges broke on the screen, that turned out to be a complete pain in the ass - we ended up drilling holes in the back shell of the lid because the regular screwholes were broken and literally crumbled. A very ugly hack of a fix, but at least now, I have a functional hinge. Also cleaned out the rest of the laptop - blew out the fan and heat sink, pulled the keyboard and blew the debris out so we didn't have an ant farm (eeewwww!) and generally cleaned it up and made sure everything was well ventilated - very necessary as Core 2 Duo CPUs can get very hot if they're not properly cooled.
