3. The Roman soldier's helmet worn by the "*" is a great touch.
Did the asterisk start at DU? I've read that it began as a reference to the Roger Marris footnote thing.

5. When I read that this morning, I smiled...
a knowing smile, and wondered how many people would not get this strip.

The key to this installment is realizing that Zonker is speaking on behalf of Doonesbury Inc., and the punchline is the phrase "Nope, it would be bad for business.", The business of Doonesbury Inc. This after extolling the virtues of the perfect candidate. And there's Bush*, reveling in the insult.

He's had a field day with the chimp, and would hate to actually have to work for a living. Life, as a cartoonist, is just a series of people and events that piss you off. We channel this anger on to an innocent piece of bristol board, and when we're finished, we feel much better.
We're addicted to anger, and will protect our supply at all costs.
For most of us, Republican administrations provide the mother lode of anger.

I'm reminded of a cartoon by Paul Conrad of the LA Times, after the re-election of Ronald Reagan, where he is celebrating at his drawing board, on which is a caricature of Reagan, looking like a clown. It can be found here:

http://www.impolitic.com/

It is at the bottom of the page.
Was Conrad a big fan of Reagan or the Republican party?
Hardly. Conrad's crowning achievement was being named to Nixon's famous "Enemies List", a dubious honor at best, yet launched a career that has included 3 Pulitzer prizes.

Yep, today's strip is funny alright, and bound to go down as one of the classics.
Let's just all pray that come November 5th, Garry Trudeau starts dreading Mondays and deadlines, just like the rest of us.

6. It's satire
especially since Bu$hie is easier to lampoon than someone else (more work).

7. Whew - maybe some humor helper for our Lady Freedom?
:-)

Read the penultimte panel and prepenultimate panel - they set up the irony quite nicely. They are obviously saying that Shrub is absolutely NOT what they set up.

(no, I'm not criticizing you, just helping out - my sister is sometimes sarcasm and irony impaired, so I help her, too)

Cheers! and :toast:

8. It's like National Lampoon, after the 1972 election...
...showing a staff celebration with the headline "Four more years of Nixon jokes!"

(Of course, that didn't turn out to be the case, but how could they have forseen that?)

9. Looks like he is killing off BD in the war
Mondays strip:

BD is away on active duty in Iraq. I don't think Doonesbury will be supporting Bush anytime soon. Looks to me like he is about to ramp up the pressure.

12. Is it just me or does this strip appear out-of-sequence?
Shouldn't it be 3-2-1-4?

But I agree, it doesn't look good for BD...

14. Panels one and two
are of the person delivering the mail.

God I hope he doesn't kill BD off. He is one of my favorite characters.

10. Yesterday on CNN
Jeanne Meserve reported that Doonesbury endorsed *. She didn't bother to mention that it was an ironic non-endorsement endorsement.
