What just made our window shatter?

We were sitting in the living room watching election returns when we heard glass break in the kitchen. The window over the sink had shattered. Our first thought was that our redneck McCain-supporting neighbor had shot out a window in a fit of spite over the election results, but just the INSIDE pane of the double-glazed window had broken. No one was in the kitchen. What the hell just happened?

3. Are the windows newly installed, like within the last year or two?

If so, then they're might still be under warranty. And is it possible that tht entire sash fell closed, shattering the inner pane but not the outer?

4. The window is ten years old

And the pane that shattered doesn't open--it's in the center section in a three section window. The windows at both ends crank open but the middle doesn't move.
