10. Crude artwork...
...but it works in context, resembling that in vintage comics. Creepy characters and general ugliness, well-written.

Even a half-assed movie ought to be pretty good, and the pictures I'm seeing look about perfect.

15. Crude compared to what? I think Gibbon's pencils are top notch.
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 01:12 PM by Dr Fate
Not to argue, but just because Gibbon's art doesnt look like a CGI video game or animie doesnt mean it's crude...

The anatomy is spot on, the architecture, backgrounds & perspective is as well...There is so much detail in each panel- and you get several panels per page- Gibbons really packs in the story...We also have to keep in mind that Gibbons had to create an entire alternate world- complete with alternate fashion, accessories, cars, buildings, etc. He totally pulls it off...

I will grant you that most of the new comic art is good from a technical POV- but they make everyone look like circus freaks with muscles on muscles on top of muscles, and the panels are so big you only get half the story per issue that you used to get...

Then again, I think Jack Kirby is the greatest comic book artist of all time, so what do I know?

;)

18. Kind of like The Rolling Stones being crude compared to say, Coldplay or Maroon 5.
I'm not seeing crudeness as such a bad thing in that case!

19. Right!
And even if it was a bad thing, it was The Way Things Were Done, and it works in a tale of whatever-happened-to.

Watchmen was so good, I forgave it its slightly primitive art--as with V For Vendetta.

9. I finally just read this.
Now...I can't can't can't wait for the movie. I really hope it doesn't go the way of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Crossing fingers. The trailer is so cool looking.

14. The problem with 300 wasnt the director, but the source material.
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 12:59 PM by Dr Fate
He followed Frank Miller's comic to a "T"

I'm not a "300" fan either- but I never liked the original comic or much that Miller did after the 80's in general...

So long as he sticks to Moore's source material (and the word is he did)- you should enjoy the movie...

Please don't let them screw this one up...

After watching the film version of V, I came to the conclusion that any graphic novel adapted for the screen is going to get dumbed down to the point of despair. I haven't seen a decent film adaptation yet.

But Watchmen... I have hope. It's a bleak, watered-down hope. But it's there.

Down to the time period (1985-complete with Nixon's 4th term) and even the Minutemen subplot.

23. Most of the costumes are pretty spot-on
Especially the Comedian and Night Owl. Adrian just looks all wrong though. I really can't see him in black, and the actor's face just seems kinda pale, sallow and unhealthy, and a bit too young.

Nice job on a non-silly-looking Manhattan too, which I wouldn't have thought possible.

I still am not convinced that Watchmen can really be satisfactorily adapted as a movie, but they sure seem to have done a great job on the art direction.
