Suggestions from NYC DUers
Hi again! I just wanted to get some suggestions for good restaurants and bars. We're staying in Midtown Manhattan and would like to get to know other parts of the city.

And yes, I am fully prepared for the deluge of Olive Garden posts :)

1. Here's one from a one-time NYC tourist
http://www.fleurdeselnyc.com/
We dug it when we visited in July '04.

2. Take a cab to Canal Street....
One side mostly Chinese (China Town) the other side heavily Italian (Little Italy). Pick a side and start walking. Next day go back, head the other way. No way you can screw this up.

Olive Garden is false. Leave that nonsense to the mall people.

3. There's an Italian Restaraut on 49th street between Park Ave and Madison Ave.
I don't remember the name, but it was really good. It's on the south side of the street.

I wasn't buying (someone else was treating - business lunch), so I don't know how pricy it was. It's also been five years since I was in there.

:hi:

4. OK, I once had a fabulous meal at this Thai place in Queens...
Lots of people swear by it...

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/sripraphai/

If you read the reviews, you will see that there have been a few examples of poor service, but most of the reviewers had high praise for the food.

My suggestion is, get on the 7 train out to Jackson Heights on a weekday, maybe lunch when there is a good chance it won't be crowded.

I'll definitely be visiting there again, in search of another phenomenal meal. Lots of other interesting ethnic places in that part of the City as well....

5. Chimichurri. 43rd and 9th. Argenting steak place, best I've ever had.
Dalton's Bar is right across 9th Ave. from it, pretty good food there too. Rudy's Bar is a must not miss, one block north on 9th. All of 9th Ave in Hell's Kitchen, most of the tourists stay near 8th.

6. Good food in Manhattan? You're fooling yourself. Go to Trenton.
:P

I concur with the other dude's suggestion of heading to Canal Street.

Also good is to go to the Village, and just walk around. Pick any restaurant at random, and you will be blown away with goodness.

While you are in midtown, if you are a steak person, you absolutely must go to Del Friscos steak restaurant on... 51st and Fifth, maybe 51 and 6th.

Best steakhouse in Manhattan, IMO.

7. Here's a suggestion for the best dinner you will ever eat and best bar
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 06:00 PM by HamdenRice
but you have to go to Brooklyn -- not far at all. Take the C train into Brooklyn. Get off at Layfayette. Walk one block north from Fulton to Layfayette Ave.

You will be at a corner where on one side of the street is a bar, Moe's, the best bar in Brooklyn -- no, the best bar in New York City -- and across the street will be a little wine bar and restaurant called Stonehome.

Stonehome has absolutely fantastic small tapas-like meals -- real gourmet stuff -- at reasonable prices. The bar tenders are very good at recommending wines to sample. Then go across the street and get drunk at Moe's:

Or get drunk at Moe's first and then have wine and dinner. Either way.

Btw, Moe's is a big supporter of Democrats, and has fundraisers for them. Look for the photoshopped picture of Bush in drag with the word "Bitch" under it behind the bar.
