speed reading
this friend of mine suggested I try it. Can anyone else vouch for it? And how should I go about it? What program, book (or CD :)) do you suggest?

1. when I was 12 I was 'clocked' reading over 1000 words per minute.
It takes me about 2.5 hours to finish an average length novel. I tend read a page all at once, kind of like in a snapshot.

Seems that reading a LOT makes one a faster reader.

Dunno about courses. Mine came naturally?

2. Better slow it down. You could blow out an eyeball that way.
Yikes!

3. Very Nice
I am a pretty quick reader too, about 3-3.5 hours for an average novel, but my mileage varies (I read texts books a lot faster then normal pleasure reading without suffering from any loss of retention.) I read each paragraph at a time and then let my brain sort it out for me.

For me it is just natural so I can't say anything about the speed reading classes.

4. I took a course in high school.
It was called Evelyn Wood Speed Reading. Since I'm ancient now, it probably does not exist anymore! But I'm sure there are good courses around.

The course I took trained my eye to take in many words all at once rather than reading one word at a time which most of us were taught to do. 30+ years later I still read this way and it is a wonderful skill. The only thing I slow down on is good literature which should be read slowly to be appreciated.

6. Had a teacher
in high school who learned how to speed read. She said she learned it in college b/c she had so many classes but later she regretted it b/c she felt like anything she tried to read for fun she just burned through it. As a librarian, all I can say is: Reading is for suckers!:bounce:
