Simple question: what was the last great band you discovered?
A band you don't find just good, but so good you must listen to an album at least five times in a row.

Mine was Pelican.

I'm mad no one told me about them sooner.

Epic, vast, vocal-less bliss.

1. The last one? Rise Against.
Absolutely hooked me 3 or so years ago with their 3rd album.

Goddammit. I'm on their website right now, and dammit, this is good.

50. It really is
I bought the CD to keep me entertained on the drive back to Phoenix from Yuma after my brother's wedding, knowing that it was another Maynard James Keenan (from Tool) project, blindly, and damn did I love it.

I ran into a fundamentalist in the record store, I said "Hi, do you have the new Puscifer CD" and she said "We'll it might be in rock, but we don't normally carry that kind of dirt", so I said "Can you help me find it in Rock?", and she said "We'll, whatever you want to call it is over here" and she pointed right at it.

Momma Sed is still a beautiful song. More people should know about it.

5. Pelican are great. I would have to say
Check out Isis and Tusk as well. (And my favourite local band, Swords. http://www.myspace.com/swords666)

As for the last really great band I discovered, I'd have to say maybe The Raveonettes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH8nJks6Vqs ), or My Disco ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_-Rg9fIO8Y ) or some band of the sort.

23. Put it this way. When Pelican started they were called Isis ripoffs.
So if you like Pelican you should have no problems with Isis. So make it three recommendations. :)

Pelican is a great live band, but even though I have all but their last CD I never quite clicked with them. I like them, but I just don't keep coming back to their CDs for some reason. Maybe because I have a dozen Isis CDs to scratch that same itch (along with a bunch of Cult of Luna and Neurosis, similar bands that are also really cool).

The band Tusk that primate mentioned is actually three members of Pelican. Cool side project.

Amazing. 25 years ago, I couldn't imagine that Cave would even still be alive in 2008.

63. The Grinderman CD was a nice surprise.
I liked the last Nice Cave CD (the double CD Lyre of Orpheus and Abbatoir Blues) but wasn't in love with it, so the stripped down, rockier sound of Grinderman was cool to hear. And it seems it carried over onto Cave's last CD, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!

I've discovered a lot of other bands since I found them 5-6 years ago, but none that caused the reaction that you describe.

However, I've been meaning to investigate The Budos Band, as I like what I've heard of their stuff. Sort of like listening to the best blaxploitation soundtrack that wasn't written by Isaac Hayes or Curtis Mayfield.

54. 3 that I'm obsessed with lately
Mr Gnome, I don't know how to describe them other than awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp6uyWeMHqU

I posted this video a few weeks ago but deserves to be posted as much as possible, simply stunning. From their Myspace page: "NIGHT ON EARTH is a group that emerged from an improvisation that was performed live by Paracrousis, a devoted post-music sound-terrorist collective.

Their musical style can be portrayed as a puzzle of trip hop and blues noir, tuned in a jazzy mood, under an improvising spirit; entering trippy and moody soundscapes that echo cinematic references."

Night on Earth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0b1ssZgFws and here's a new video from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwc7fPZ3ZtY

Dirty Three, not sure how I missed them they've been around for 10-15 years but I just found out about them earlier this summer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkUqcpHhUvA

72. They use a nice mix of aggression and ambience.
My friend is majorly hooked on them, and said their CD was his second favorite of last year, behind Deathspell Omega.

Here's a few others you might like. Or not. :)

Woe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdoRyWZ0aMM&feature=related
(Best CD of the year for me, and it came out of nowhere. Like Leviathan, this is just one guy who plays everything himself. His drumming is a standout, and the riffs are crushing. I've spoken to him a bunch of times now and he's also a real cool dude. Great first release. And apparently the whole CD is up on Youtube to check out.)

Leviathan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqMZ9QwlKGs&feature=related
(This song could be played on a perpetual loop and I'd die a happy man.)

Deathspell Omega

(These guys are the hardest band to get into, but once you do they are one of the most rewarding of all. I still discover new things on their last two CDs, but it took me months to start to fully appreciate what I was hearing. It's rather chaotic at times, but cranked it all swirls together into a maelstrom of awesomeness.)

62. Big Business.

Big Business Slays. That is all.

I would have said Kayo Dot, but that's music made for music nerds by music nerds. They're quite glacially paced and allow themselves to wander more often than not, but it's still very colorful chording if you're patient.

68. Kayo Dot is far better as a live act than their recordings let on.
I've seen them a bunch of times, and they are always fantastic live. And Mia is pleasant to look at, to say the least. Toby Driver also did Maudlin of the Well, which is similar to Kayo Dot but with thrash parts tossed in. The singer of Sepultura once said Kayo Dot was "cough syrup" music, and he's basically right, but I think it's a good thing and not an insult.

Big Business just kicks ass. If you don't already know, the last two Melvins CDs have had Jared and Cody in the band with them, and they tour together (just saw both earlier this summer). They already sound a lot like the Melvins, so it was only natural to incorporate them right into the band with Buzzo and Dale. The two drummers work awesome together (which is funny, because the vid you posted has Dale Crover playing guitar...he's a drummer normally).

This is with both drummers together.

73. That is, to those who get to see them live.
Kayo Dot for whatever reason never plays in NE Ohio. They always go to Columbus or Toledo or someplace really far away that I can't drive to on a work night.

I missed Big Business the last time they came with the Melvins. I've seen the two bands prior to that. Jared and Cody make such a natural addition to their sound.

67. Al Stewart
I know that he's been around for 40 years, but he's been blowing me away over the past year. "Year of the Cat" has got to be one of the greatest albums of the 70's, if not the past several decades. "Year of the Cat", and "Lord Grenville", from that record are two of the best songs I've ever heard - ever.

More recently, Gowns, who are just amazing. http://www.myspace.com/gowns Maybe this doesn't really count, because a friend of mine is in it, but I have friends in lots of bands, and they aren't as good as Gowns.

77. Medeski, Martin, and Wood.
"Tonic" is a trouncing, easier-listening intro to their sometimes (beautifully) cacaphonous work.
