Random question: What do wasps do in the winter?

Do they hibernate? If so, can you kill them by spraying a "dormant" nest?

3. The colony dies

except for the queen who hibernates usually underground or anywhere that is not freezing. Nests aren't reused.

4. I called the exterminators last spring because I had a nest of angry wasps.

The exterminator told me to wait a few weeks until there was more action in the nest. They only want to spray when the nest is active. Turns out the wasps had cannibalized the nest of paper wasps (who are sweet wasps that don't bother humans) so I didn't feel too guilty about destroying them. Don't know what they do in winter. But they were nasty bugs come spring.
