Sting is 57 today.
I used to adore this guy in high school. Really loved his music. Bordered on obsession.

These days....eh.

Do you have any favorite Police or Sting songs?

Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is my favorite.

Do you have any that drive you up a wall?

I can't STAND Every Breath You Take. I hated it when it was popular and I hate it now.

4. The Police were great; Sting solo, not so much.
My fave Police song: "Reggatta De Blanc".

16. Almost like an Angelina Jolie/Jon Voight kind of thing...
In that you can see the genetics at work, but they've produced a much better result for the child than for the parent. :P

6. I really liked "Dream of the Blue Turtles."
I worked in a record store (yep, *record* store) the summer it came out and we played it constantly. Pleasant associations.

And yes, he was hawt back then. :)

9. I like the Police much better than solo Sting.
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic is awesome.

Every Breath You Take becomes a lot cooler when you consider that he probably intended it to be from the POV of a creepy stalker. Not his fault if stupid people want to play it at weddings.

17. Yeah, I remember the man himself on TV (probably VH1) talking about
how people have come up to him, telling him enthusiastically that they had "Every Breath" played at their wedding, and all he can say is "Good luck." LOL

10. "Bring On the Night" from "Regatta de Blanc"
Edited on Fri Oct-03-08 11:21 AM by Rob H.
My brother, Rich, was a huge fan of The Police, and he and I spent a lot of time together in the summer of 1985. It was right before my senior year in high school and his sophomore year in college, and we spent a lot of time going to the movies (tickets were actually cheap then), hanging out with his friends, and just generally goofing around. Even though they'd already broken up, The Police provided our soundtrack for that entire summer. Rich was killed in a car accident in February of 1989, and hearing their music and especially that song reminds me of those fun, laid-back times and of how lucky I was to have him as my brother.

 Must be some very good and poignant memories.

I'm a year younger than you, it seems (graduated HS in '87) and I remember that summer, "Bring on the Night" (which I just loved). Good times indeed. My best friend and I (she'd just gotten her driver's license) spent the whole summer driving around listening to the Police and Sting, too.

edited to add a few words I'd forgotten...

15. Thanks, Flaxbee
I'm lucky to have a lot of good memories of him--he was WAY more outgoing than I was then and it was great that he never made me feel left out or like his "annoying little brother". (Come on, hanging out with him and his college friends while I was still in high school? How many big brothers would be willing to do that?) I always like to say that we were each other's biggest fans.

 back atcha. :)

14. I love Roxanne. Great song, even when Eddie Murphy does it.
Sting was doing his Bob Marley soundalike back then.

18. Much like Colin Hay from Men at Work, or whatsisname from the English Beat.
What was it with that time period, and British/Australian guys putting on fake Caribbean accents?

19. sting will always be hot to me
also, i have most of his solo stuff.

I think he's an excellent songwriter and composer.

I like it that he was willing to change his style and be expressive, making the music that he wanted.
I know people want their artists to never change, but I admire artists that do what they want instead of trying to do the same thing over and over again or just going the easy route.
My 2 cents, anyway.

20. The Police were friggin' awesome, but Sting's done some good tunes as a solo artist.
A talent like his doesn't just dry up and die overnight, you know?

"Fortress Around Your Heart": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Gd0cvOHTHE
"Love Is the Seventh Wave": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvkxle5M2E4
"All This Time": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Ewh6Bk-Qo

Okay, maybe the last one ups the cheese factor just a BIT too much, but good songwriting is good songwriting, regardless.
