Man - I'd forgotten what a piece of shit Bernstein's "Mass" is.
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 06:57 PM by Rabrrrrrr
I'm listening to WNYC, the show "Evening Music" which is about the Mass tonight, because Lincoln Center is doing some big fucking Bernstein celebration.

Most of Bernstein's music is just awful - it's dated, cliche, and not interesting. Yeah, it's full of tritones and dissonance and odd rhythms, but it's all done with all the interest and flair of Celine Dion.

He's like Stravinsky for the Reader's Digest set.

Except his Jeremiah Symphony - I kind of like that one.

Otherwise, he's awful, and his Mass is particularly heinous. Not for theological reasons, just for reasons of artistry.

I can't help but laugh at it. Just like I can't help but laugh at West Side Story. His ludicrous attempts at "jazz" are, seriously, like Jack Chick's attempts at "thinking".

:puke:

Listening to this I'm totally transported to 1971 with men in "sensitive" sandals and shorts, EST seminars, sideburns, blow-dryed hair with feathering and "sensitive" beards, and playing Earth Games out in the fields...

On reflection, maybe more like Mantovani channeling Janacek.

3. Uh-huh. Heresy it may be, but you're right. I know this from experience, being someone
who has never liked the Beatles, nor acknowledged their supposed musical genius.

5. West Side Story has parts that will live forever.
And the Overture to Candide is really good.

But yes, the Mass is a POS.

8. My dad
also a composer, remembered the days when he was called "Lenny." He spit out the name Lenny Bernstein contemptously.

17. Unlike Mahler , Bernstien was a phenomenal conductor
His Tristan und Isolde is stunning.

Too bad he was a second rate composer.

Atleast he was not as bad as weber (the new one )
