Are there any coin collectors here?
Edited on Sun Sep-21-08 06:30 AM by Droopy
I just got into collecting a few months ago. I'd like to eventually work my way up to U.S. gold coins, but for now I'm collecting recently minted, U.S. proof and uncirculated coins. What is your most valuable coin? I have a 2001 S-mint proof Sacagawea dollar coin that's worth a little over a hundred dollars. You can get it at a dealer for $125. I also have 2 Presidential dollar error coins in uncirculated condition. I think they are worth about $125 a piece right now, too, but I look for them to go way up in value in the future. I think that there are only 25,000 of them known to exist.

3. My husband collects coins.
Has for years. He buys gold coins, both foreign and US as well as antiquities.

He subscribes to Coin World and some other magazine whose name escapes me. He says that they are invaluable for tracking coin prices.

Additionally, there is a local guy here who participates in coin shows and Mr. goes when he goes because the guy is very, very honest.

My son collects as well.

4. A good price guide is essential
if you are going to get into collecting old and foreign coins. I'm just a beginner, but I've come to learn that if you find a good, honest dealer you can really save a lot of money. Knowing how to grade coins is also important, especially if you are buying older coins. I'm not very good at that yet, but I'm just buying coins right now that I know have not been in circulation.
