The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced this morning that its 2008 honorees are veteran actor Morgan Freeman, country crooner George Jones, actress and singer Barbra Streisand, choreographer Twyla Tharp, and rock legends Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend of The Who.
"The 2008 Honorees have redefined the way we see, hear and feel and the performing arts," Stephen A. Schwarzman, the Kennedy Center Chairman, said in a statement.
This is largely true, as it would be difficult to find someone over the age of, say, 25 who has not seen a movie, heard a song or seen at least one member of the combined 2008 class in performance. Taken together, the honorees have created standards in rock and country music, iconic moments in popular cinema and redefined modern dance. This year's list is also notable for not including a classical or jazz musician. more..
