That which does not think is not self-aware, but that does not negate its existence. And as Descartes disproved the "evil demon" thesis (to his satisfaction, anyway), the phenomenal (Kant's word, I know) is still real.

Hence, by Descartes' own teleology, thought is not a precondition of existence.

Which means the Cogito is hogwash.
