UPDATE on my Conference/Thesis funding Situation:
Whew!

The Honors Program office came through, and quick! Because my abstract has already been accepted for the conference, they will definitely fund my registration fee and poster printing expenses (it's a 4' x 8' poster). I just need to come in on Monday and fill out the Undergrad Research Fund application, with a detailed budget of that and my thesis expenses (I'm doing a large survey and need $ for copying, the pre-testing and pilot testing). The woman at the office thinks that it will be easy to fund all of it.

She also read my abstract and said it was "wonderful", and that she really enjoyed reading about my research.

Thank jeebus. Now I can actually work on my thesis this weekend instead of stressing out. :woohoo:

But, I'm still livid with my Dept Chair and the Prof who blocked my funding. Eventually, I will let them know that. Like, after my thesis defense. :P

:hi: Thanks for all of the support, everyone. Seriously.

25. They'll love you and be very gentle. Intellectually. Er, um...
Never mind. I can't make it not sound wrong. You know what I mean.

The Ph.D.s will be thrilled that you are doing a poster presentation at a conference this early in your academic career. They will lob you lots of softball questions they think you're able to answer, and make suggestions about how to make things better. If someone asks a question you can't handle, odds are good someone else there will bail you out. Just make sure you can explain why you used the stats you used, and you'll be fine.

Some handy cop-out answers in any discipline: (1) "That was outside the scope of the study." (2) "That's definitely something to consider for future research." (3) "I hadn't considered that issue. Thank you for bringing it up."

And poster sessions can be very social and may involve alcohol. My first one consisted of standing by the poster and drinking wine. For the most part I talked about favorite places I had lived with some (really nice) high mucky-muck from a federal agency.

At my last conference I was the only grad student in my session, and the other presenters were some of the biggest guns in the field. I felt like a rank amateur, to put it generously. I told one of the big guns how nervous and intimidated I was being in a session with him, and he told me I wouldn't be there if I didn't deserve it. Whether I did or not is immaterial, but it's something to remind yourself: you wouldn't be there if you didn't deserve it, and your abstract was accepted, so you do.

Sorry about the funding thing. I would have been down in the social justice office shrieking to one of the people there about discrimination so fast all the air would have been sucked out of my department as I left. There would have been exploded faculty everywhere.

Poopyheads. Glad you got it straightened around.

26. Wow, you made me feel so much better!
I'll still be nervous, but that makes me a little less so. It's only 2 hours of my life, so I should chill out. And yeah, I know how unusual it is to be an Undergrad at an Academic/Professional conference, from a State school, so I should remember that. Sometimes I forget that other people in my field view my efforts differently than I do. I think I'm insane, but they may view me favorably. :D

You rock. Thanks so much. :pals:

Trust me, I would have raised hell *if* the information I got was something I was actually supposed to know. I'm ok with the current outcome though. Now I can do my work. :)

Don't be afraid to approach the big guns with genuine questions about their work, if you have any. They eat that shit up. ;)

off topic, but i have to go grocery shopping in a few. it's so damn hot and humid here and I have been putting it off. I just wish I was done with it already and back home watching my next episode of OZ. :(

I am not the only one who lives here. The only reason I don't want to go out is because it is too damn hot and humid otherwise I don't mind. heat makes me pukey feeling, I ((WITHER))LOL

so the blurb was the abstract. I wasn't sure. interesting topic anyway, IMHO.

Yes, it was. That's what you submit to a conference/or journal before they accept your work. I'z scared! Accepted, funding secured...can't back out now! :o

Yes, let's talk later. Good luck with the trip!
