any advice? any HELP? I just found this hurt bird.

I found this bird in my yard, it seems like it's wing is broken or something. I tried to make it comfortable but I don't know what else to do. Do some kind of county services deal with this stuff, should I bother calling? Or I could just make a cage for it and feed it and water it.. til it dies or something? :(
I was just gonna put this in the animal room but I try for even more help :)
And I'm fixing to ask my mom and my aunt but then they're just gonna say for me NOT TO TOUCH IT.

1. Look for a wildlife rehabilitator
Maybe in the yellow pages or call your county extension agent. Also state wildlife departments might also have a list of rehabilitators. Zoos and aquariums might also know what you should do.

6. That happened to me once...
Found an immature blackbird. Took it to a wildlife rescue operation operated by the state (Missouri). The only stipulation was they could not take a sparrow, as sparrows are not indigenous to Missouri (they came over from Europe, and therefore not considered a "Missouri bird").

Did the same thing with a baby squirrel that fell out of a tree. Eyes were still closed, but did it have claws!!!

2. I am sorry to tell you that this is a sad situation.
Unless you are able to take the bird to a veterinarian and pay a lot of money, there really isn't much you can do and the bird is likely to die.

A downed bird has likely had an encounter with a cat. And once a cat bites a bird, the poor little thing is not likely to live.

You can provide safety and water within reach. And if the birdie dies, you can bury it in a flower bed so that the circle of life continues.

I'm sorry. I know how helpless you feel.

He seemed to have lots of energy and I just thought his wing was broken or something. But after I called the Animal Welfare league (they were gonna call me back) he started shaking and contorting, then he died :( He's immortalized on the internets now though, good little birdy.

 What I'm afraid of now is that I literally scared it to death just looking at it. I just have to believe it was this particular bird's time..

11. Good idea -- that's a blue jay.
They are related to crows, which seem to get West Nile more than other birds. More likely it was injured by a cat, but it might be a good idea to get it checked out.

12. I'm bothered by the description of what sounds like convulsions.
Usually if a cat gets a bird, they go very quietly.

13. I'm gonna look up the west nile fever
The convulsions were right at the end and seemed just like part of death.. but that's when I had my hand on him too :scared: I handled him a lot actually. I need to look this West Nile stuff up.

14. Some info about West Nile in birds:
http://www.birdwatchers.com/WestNile.html

BTW, you can't get it from a sick bird; it's transmitted only by mosquitoes.

I could get the symptoms of West Nile in humans but not in birds!

17. whew
I have to admit, I haven't really listened when they mentioned West Nile on the news. Anything resembling plagues and pathogens should get everyone's close attention.

10. We have a wild bird center down here.
But if you can put him back where you find him (if it has not been too long)...the mom will come fetch him. That is the number one thing with fledglings.

Otherwise, call your local animal control and see if they have a number for a bird rescue.

Good luck to you and the baby.

16. TY!
I called my Animal Welfare League which is only about a mile away. I can't drive but I could have moved him if I needed to.

But they said they'd need to hang up and call me back and then he passed away while I waited. I'm afraid I scared him to death but I'm gonna convince myself it was just his time.

Thank you. I've been feeding the animals in my yard for years so really it's surprising this is my first situation like this.. next time I'll have a plan.

19. Hey, I am sorry.
I always find birds in extremis, so I know how you feel.

You didn't scare him, but probably made him feel safe.

Always put them in a dark place, that calms them. Then call whoever can help.

If you find a large bird in trouble, you can cover them with a towel and they feel safe in the dark. Small ones too.

Be careful of the large birds and their beaks.

18. sorry for your loss
I like to collect bird bones. I would put it out and let the bugs get to it. Then boil it clean. I just made a shadowbox with a bird skull and some flowers I painted silver. Very striking.

20. HEY
Hey that's what I was telling my husband I ought to do! I think I will find a place outside to keep him.. somewhere the raccoons won't be able to steal him from.
