The ABSOLUTE COOLEST ELECTRONIC DEVICE EVAR!!!!!!!
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 06:45 PM by jasonc
Is the Logitech Harmony remote.

I got one of these recently, and spent today setting it up. It is awesome. Goodbye clutter of remotes and hello one single remote that controls everything...

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/remotes/universal_remotes/devices/374&cl=us,en

Simply awesome and easy to use and set up.

Never really had any complaint. Never had to spend $350 for one either.

Also, none of the Universal remotes that I could find anywhere else could control my pre-amp.

23. Note how you use the plural "remotes"....
The one the OP is talking about is the last one you'll ever need. Just plug it into your computer, it goes to the logitech site and gets all the updates for all the latest equipment.

Theoretically, it's the last one you'll ever need no matter how much or often you upgrade anything that uses a remote.

You can get other versions for about $150.

35. Most things made by logitech last.
But the point is the same; if you take care of it, you won't ever have to buy one again.

Logitech stuff is still very high quality. I'd be surprised if I bought one and it didn't last more than 5 years.

My current logitech trackman has been the only mouse I've needed for nearly seven years now.

This one's pretty slick and would fit easily on my coffee table.

But $350 is a bit rich for my blood.

19. Well only if I tossed all my other remotes
As I would only need the universal. It would be my luck my son or somebody else would lose the universal remote and then I would have to go hunting for the original remotes. It is a very good product as I enjoy any device that makes my life easier. I just don't think it would last around my house with kids running through the living room and taking things into different parts of the house.

you do not need the old remotes to program this one. You plug it into the computer, tell it what you have and it downloads the right command codes.

25. $350?!
I was thinking, yeah, i could use that: Satellite/Tivo, DVD/Videotape, TV, old Sony receiver, maybe even the old Sony CD player.

But three hundred and fifty dollars? No way. I'd rather buy an iPhone.

27. Yes
I think the Twins will hold on.

This one controls all the usual tv/satellite/tivo/etc... but also my stereo equipment (rare) and the Mac Mini I have plugged into it, as well as a Gas Fireplace and the heating/cooling unit.

basically it controls anything with a remote because it has the capability to learn.

29. It's not really that much.
About $100 cheaper other places online. Still expensive though. Personally, I'm looking at the Harmony One - which can be frequently be found on sale for under $200. YES it's expensive - but I have a brazillion remotes, and if anyone ever came to my house and tried to watch tv, a movie, listen to music etc they'd never be able to figure it out. The allure of these remotes is that you can program them in such a way that, for instance, if you want to watch a dvd you push "Watch DVD" and it will turn the tv on and to the proper input, switch the av receiver to the proper setting, and turn on the dvd player - all with the push of one button.

Satellite box, DVD player, TV and stereo I figure that leaves me about $330 for better things.

32. The nice thing about the Harmony models is that they have macro capability, meaning that
they when you press a single button (i.e. "Watch DVD"), they will turn your TV to the appropriate channel, configure themselves for use with the DVD player, turn our receiver to the correct input, etc., all with a single button.

It's great if you have a spouse, SO, etc. that doesn't comprehend all the myriad remotes required for a typical small home theater.
