Anybody besides me sick of "Dr." James Dobson?
Geezamighty! I am so sick of seeing that sanctimonious prick's mug on the tube, speaking against gay marriage! He's a LOUSY representative of Christianity, and I have to believe that Jesus Christ is pretty sick of him too!! I'd almost rather see Jerry Falwell, so help me!! How 'bout y'all?

"believe that Jesus Christ is pretty sick" thats because jesus was probably gay....it makes sense....thats why god is on our side on this one.....ill bet the pope secretly is in favor of this too......most priests are gay too, but they cant come out of the confesssional so to speak.....

5. I agree.
I read a great book titled "James Dobson's War on America," authored by the guy who helped him found Focus on the Family. Guy, the co-founder, saw the light and was asked to leave when he fell in love with a nice lady on the staff (he had already separated from his first wife and subsequently divorced). According to the author, Dobson is really about raising money so that he can demand certain action from all levels of government. Money and power. How original.

3. He's a spider-over-the-fire fundamentalist.
Dobson is monstrous. He is shrewd like Machiavelli and probably self-hating as well. A witch-burner.

He has hijacked the New Testament to forward his own limitations and fears.

No one in the mainstream media will take him on. I'd like to see a debate between him and Bill Moyers.

6. I think you're right.
Moyers is sincere about his faith -- and I kind of miss his voice on the national scene. He's stepping down from PBS to finish his book on LBJ. I don't blame him one bit, but I'll miss him.

19. Moyers is a certified Baptist minister.
And a very wide-ranging scholar.

And a strong social progressive.

I love the guy.

9. Seen his SON??
Edited on Tue Feb-24-04 11:22 PM by southerngirlwriter
His son's book -- I read it in the bookstore standing up and shaking before I put it on the shelf -- is horrifying to real Christians. :scared:

The boy's name is Ryan, if I remember right. I'll go to amazon and look for a link.

On edit: I can't make an amazon link without all my personal info being available; the ISBN is 1590521528. Look it up if you're braver than me and interested in the spawn of Dobson. :scared:

10. i find it interesting that he has problem with gay marrige when...
using the excuse that it will be an 'unstable family situation, with people coming and going as they please' when i dont think it would be any different than straight marrige. he oddly isnt saying anything about divorce, though... hm, odd.

11. My parents forced me to read one of his books when I was a teenager
They're not fundies though, they were just too embarrassed to talk to me about teenager stuff themselves.

The only part I remember from it is that when I think about touching myself, I'm not supposed to picture women in my imagination because that would be lust and that is a sin, plus Jesus can see everything I do.

23. Dobson's view of parenting: "Threaten Children with destruction."
"In The Strong-Willed Child, Dobson compares child rearing with dog rearing. He describes a situation in which Sigmund, the family dog, refuses to leave his resting place, the "furry lid of the toilet seat":

"I had seen this defiant mood before, and knew there was only one way to deal with it. The only way to make Siggie obey is to threaten him with destruction. Nothing else works. I turned and went to my closet and got a small belt to help me 'reason' with Mr. Freud.

"What developed next is impossible to describe. That tiny dog and I had the most vicious fight ever staged between man and beast. I fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt. I am embarrassed by the memory of the entire scene. Inch by inch I moved him toward the family room and his bed. As a final desperate maneuver, Siggie backed into the corner for one last snarling stand. I eventually got him to bed, only because I outweighed him 200 to 12!

"But this is not a book about the discipline of dogs; there is an important moral to my story that is highly relevant to the world of children. JUST AS SURELY AS A DOG WILL OCCASIONALLY CHALLENGE THE AUTHORITY OF HIS LEADERS, SO WILL A LITTLE CHILD—ONLY MORE SO." (emphasis Dobson) "

16. I agree
I'm sooo sick of seeing him because of the gay marriage stuff. I loved it when a cspan caller said, "I'm a hetrosexual man, married to the same woman for years, and have grandkids. How in the Hell are gays and lesbian marriages going to make any differenc in my marriage?" Dobson couldn't answer so of course he answered a question that wasn't asked. By the way, I'm starting to think (maybe it's just wishful thinking) that a lot of moderates are getting sick of this and think it should be a state issue. I think a lot of straights think that the country has a lot more important things to worry about - so maybe the republican plan will backfire.

22. another nutbar with warped views on parenting
is Gary Ezzo. Do a search for his name or for "Growing Kids God's Way"

A good general overview of him can be found here:

http://www.rickross.com/reference/gfi/gfi1.html

I was a fan of Dobson for a little while, and some of his writing about relationships makes for good reading, if you can pick and choose what you read.

Anymore, though, I'd just rather not bother with it.
