What are your thoughts on the Olympic coverage so far?
Seems to be less cheesy sob stories this time around. This time it's "so and so is that person's best friend." They've got in-depth BFF coverage on NBC. Just as cheesy, but less annoying.

So far.

6. How were they during the opening ceremonies?
Did they "Ooooooh! Isn't that beautiful!" and other 'insightful' commentary to while it was going on?

After listening to our fucktards do that during the '88 Winter Games opening ceremonies and switching to a Canadian station that just showed it, I don't watch that part anymore.

13. Watching the opening ceremonies
was like watching a movie with someone who loves the sound of his own voice and refuses to shut up.

And here comes the Central African Republic. That's a Republic in Africa, in the central region.

7. It is a definite improvement over the coverage of the Nagano Winter Games
Those just about drove me up the wall. It was ten minutes of sports, ten minutes of up-close-and-personal or naive, gee whiz stories about Japan, ten minutes of commercials, and then back to another ten minutes of sports.

However, I REALLY could have done without the interview with the Bushboy. I chose that stretch of time to straighten up the apartment.

There's these newfangled cameras. They're on tracks. No shit! Tracks, I tell you!

Why the hell are they showing it from a 45 deg angle! AAAaaarrrggghhh...!

12. I like seeing the swimmers underwater - you can see changes in technique
in the strokes...

As a former swimmer, I love all the technical discussion from Rowdy Gaines, or whatever his name is.

10. I think it's been pretty good so far
way less human interest stories this year, however they did show one last night about a 33 year old Russian gymnast and her son's struggle to overcome Leukemia which was actually a very nice story.

I usually block out all the fluffy stuff and let the individual performances tell the real story

14. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be as unrelentingly jingoistic as in the past Olympics.
Although, I wish they'd do more interviews with athletes from other countries.

15. ABC did a much better job with the Olympics
ABC's coverage had a warmth and realism to it. NBC's coverage is technically top-notch but also cold and clinical. I miss Jim McKay, Roone Artlelidge (sp?) and the "Up Close and Personal" athlete profiles which were never cheesy or corny but always illuminated who the person really was rather than just the athlete.

17. Our is good except NBC bought the timetable for the American viewers..
which is why the swimming finals are in the morning sessions and therefore Britain missed it when Rebecca Adlington won a gold medal because it was about 3am and it might be when the French were wanting to beat the US team in the relay.
The swimming programme has always been heats in the morning and and finals in the evening but the BBC explained that it NBC pays so much money, it has been able to buy the schedule and change they way swim meets so Europe misses the finals or misses sleeps.
The BBC doesn't do to much cheesiness though.

25. It's been OK... No complaints here.
Like you said, less of the heart-tugging hard-luck tales is good. Some of the commentators are a little too chatty, by overall, the coverage has been informative.

27. The men's synchronized diving was captivating...
:puke:
This cannot be the best sport possible to use up airwaves.

Over a 1.5 hour time, I randomly turned on the TV to olympics and 5 out of 6 times got commercials.

There's not enough coverage of competitive sports, too much of subjective judging sports and its geared to a demographic that does not follow sports.

28. NBC has too much fluff, coverage on other networks is much better
Those are endless sports. I like the Soccer channel, Universal HD, USA, and CNBC at night. It is still so much better than Atlanta, where there were no live sports and it was in the Eastern Time Zone.
