And I only vaguely knew who Edith Piaf was. I sat speechless for about a half an hour absorbing it. I still find it almost a supernatural experience. Marion Cotillard was transcendent in that role; how amazing it was. Loved it. :-)

19. "Das Boot". In the original German.
But the English dub-job is the best I've ever seen. All of the German actors dubbed themselves into English. And most of the time, the mouth-movements are pretty close to the spoken dialogue.

Great movie...

23. Compères, Les
they remade this in the USA i think.

It was actually not that bad in the original french. I watched all kinds of dumb movies in French class for 3 years. The most fucked up was when I was tripping nuts on LSD and we watched Beauty and the Beast with French dubbing. Wow that was messed up.

Actually, I wouldn't say that was my favorite. There was another movie I saw in French class, that I don't know the name of. The father was a school teacher atheist socialist, and the story was told from the point of view of his son. It was about them taking vacation in the french countryside.

Funniest foreign film I've ever seen.

There was an American version made starring Martin Short that

"West Beirut" is an awesome film too. I can't remember the director off the top of my head.

78. AllieB, your list gleams.
I'm with you on all of the ones I've also seen, but especially Wenders' WINGS OF DESIRE, Malle' AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS, and THE LIVES OF OTHERS.

Got to see WINGS at a film festival some many moons back, and was lucky enough to be in Miami for the premier of AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS. Malle spoke to the audience at the festival, asking them to give the film fair consideration as his life's best work.

I didn't have to be asked twice. What a stunning, emotionally devastating film.

77. King of Masks.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115669/
Wang Bianlian is an aging street performer known as the King of Mask for his mastery of Sichuan Change Art in a true story. His wife left him with and infant son over 30 years ago. The son died from illness at age 10. This left Wang a melancholy loner aching for a male descendent to learn his rare and dying art. A famous master performer of the Sichuan Opera offers to bring him into his act, thus giving Wang fame and possible fortune, but Wang opts for staying the simple street performer. Then, one night after a performance he is sold a young boy by a slave trader posing as the boy's parent. "Grandpa" finds new joy in life as he plans to teach "Doggie" (an affectionate term often used for young children in China) his art. All is well until Doggie is found out to really be a girl.

79. Has anybody seen THE DREAMLIFE OF ANGELS or CLOSE TO LEO?
If you want some fine film-making and some intense emotional experiences, maybe rent these two French films and see what you think.

Saw both in Berlin with a group of film addicts and felt that they were as visceral and authentic as it gets.

Here's a hint: Kevin Costner isn't in either one of them.
