I think I'm on a death watch for my cat

She's got renal failure. She's 18 years old, and has had a really good life, but I think it's coming to an end. She's been on special vet-prescribed low protein food for a few months now, which she doesn't particularly like, and she's been a chow-hound all her life. No longer. She won't eat, she hardly drinks now, and she hasn't peed more than a few drops in a few days now. I've got a call out to the vet to ask if he thinks IV fluids are worth trying, or would it be prolonging the inevitable. I work with hospice nurses who recommend stopping IV hydration for terminal cases for that reason.

So, like George Carlin once said, when you get a pet, you're in for heartbreak 15 years or so down the road.

Our kitty died one and a half years ago of lymphosarcoma when he was only 5 1/2, and it was so hard for me... I still choke up sometimes when I think of him.
