1. But FARNSWORTH? You told her about him, right?
I mean, it's too bad, it really is too bad, but Pudge seemed to have a look lately of a short timer......not his performance, he just didn't seem to be bonding too much with his teammates.

I don't wish him permanent injury, but maybe a little back strain......

How is WannaBe taking it?

4. I really didn't see it like that Lisa.
I saw Leyland platoon him with a cruddy batter (Inge) and Pudge paid the price. I'd take him over Farnsworth anyday. What's next? Magglio?

She's mad that this team tends to be bandwagon fan led these days. :(

6. But we've lost so many games in the last couple of innings
I like Pudge, too - don't get me wrong - but as soon as he was in the trade mix, he seemed to start playing as if he was auditioning. Which I guess he was. It's nothing concrete - I just didn't see Pudge acting as engaged with the team lately.

I know there have been bandwagon fans, but that happens everywhere, and believe me, it's a lot better in Detroit as far as the loyal ones than it is in most places (like Seattle, where they just LOST a team).

7. I know he wanted to finish out his career in Detroit.
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 05:45 PM by MrsGrumpy
I know he worked hard. I also know what MSM said about Pudge and the team and I haven't really bought the "trouble in the clubhouse" stuff they've (97.1) been wanting to stir up.

Coming from Milwaukee (you and and your sister not withstanding) I am horrified by the fans of this state. My dad and I never could get over it. I know Detroit has many good fans, but I have also sat in many an empty stadium because the team was on a losing streak. Stats and production are my thing and the Tigers are going to regret this ala Sean Casey. :(

8. Couldn't agree with you more on Casey
That was a dumb move. In fact, when Sexson became available from the Mariners (6'8" first baseman), I thought Detroit should have snapped him up. Instead, the Yankees got him, too.

But you haven't seen fairweatherfandom till you've lived here. The Tigers were bad for a LONG TIME, and they had a very unpopular former owner, who also let the stadium get really run down. Yet they were still never at the very bottom of attendance, and the city's never been afraid of losing any of its teams. I feel bad about Pudge, too - I liked him - but he would have been gone next year anyway, at least that's the feeling I was getting. I actually like Inge, because he's so versatile, but his hitting has been off (he's had two injuries this year, nicht?) We'll see what shakes out.

the Lions in too. I was pretty much sure they would resign Pudge until the Tigers message boards got to them, much as they die inre Grilli. It's funny to look at Grilli stats and see how well he pitched away versus at home. It became a project for my father and I. The Brewers have always had a tenuous team...and had one of the ugliest stadiums (I still loved it) on earth... and we had trouble getting tickets. It is just my opinion though. :) But, I confess, my dad and I make fun of Detroit fans all of the time for their whichever way the wind is blowing attitudes. I forgot to add, you and 1goblue and my boss are the best Detroit fans I've ever met and have restored a bit of my faith.

11. The Detroit and Michigan economies have been in the tank too
I'm sure that accounts for a lot of it. With the Pistons, it always looks as if there are plenty of fans when I see the games on TV, but of course, their location doesn't help. And the NBA is down in general.

Don't forget re: the Tigers, too - a lot of fans were pissed that they moved in the first place, and a lot of Detroiters have moved. So it's a case of attracting a new set of fans and it seems to some extent they've done that, even if they appear fair weather now.

Why the Lions continue to draw even more than 1000 per game is beyond me. Yet they do! Well, who am I to talk. I still buy their gear.

in 82. I know you're a great fan Lisa but the rest of them just aren't. The Brew Crew have never won a Series and their fans don't boo from the stands. Not what I'm used to. It's the "What have you done for me lately?" "Lord Stanley or you stink" syndrome.

As I told you, the Green Bay fans drank up all the beer on the 300 level of the Kingdome once! I think they thought they were IN Green Bay! And I'm no piker.

2. Aw, that's too bad. I hate trades.
I did see Pudge pull the mother of all tantrums a few years ago at an Oakland game, though. He seemed a tad unhappy with some of the calls, and then went postal after the A's got a grand slam (oh, I do miss Jay Peyton). I think he threw every piece of equipment in the dugout onto the field.

How did she take it?

WannaBe and I LOVE Pudge!

But remember, you were there, Dombrowski told me personally he will never trade Granderson. I will SO be on the warpath if that happens.

At least Inge has had two HRs in the last two games. But I hate his haircut.

16. I thought it was a crappy trade.
Yeah, the Yanks needs a catcher, especially one that hits better than Molina but Farnsworth has been doing a great job, imo. I like him. He could be rather erratic but for the most part he got the job done. Pitching is what wins championships. We have a boat load of hitter.

22. He was the greatest catcher I'd ever seen when he first came up.
I was a big Rangers fan then. Used to sit in the outfield of an old metal stadium scarcely better than high school bleachers, when the stands were so empty the players could here what you were whispering to the person next to you. They called Pudge up when he 19, on his wedding day. He got married that morning at a minor league ball park, and pitched that night in the majors--not that you could tell it by the old Arlington stadium. Everyone had heard rumors about his arm strength, and the first time he tried to throw a runner out at second, the crowd gasped. He would get the ball to second sometimes before the base runner had started his slide.

Very early on he faced Ricky Henderson, at just about the time Henderson was heading for the record books. He was the all time steal leader, just off an MVP, IIRC. Henderson was on a role in every stadium that year, and the hype was over the matchup between his stealing and Pudge's arm. Rickey got up to bat, got a walk, I think, and the crowd--the Rangers home crowd--cheered. Rickey took a lead off first, and the crowd started chanting, "Steal, steal, steal."

I don't even remember what happened on that play after that. It was a great matchup every time it happened, though. People would go see the games to watch the battle between the catcher and the base runner more than the pitchers and batters. And when the runner wouldn't steal, Pudge would pick them off at first. He'd throw to first sometimes when the runner barely had a lead.

I haven't watched baseball much since he left the Rangers. I'm sure he's not that good anymore. But he brings back fond memories of why I used to love the sport.

23. He is still that good, jobycom.
He ranks 5th right now and is still throwing out runners who think he won't catch them game to game. He caught Ichiro with a small lead just a few weeks ago, and that is impossible.
