Asphalt shingles

So we know the shingles are made of oil, that shingles have been tracking the oil prices.



The job was FAST. 6 hours later, there are BUMPS. Isn't it all supposed to lie flat?!1


It supposedly has a 1 yr guarantee. Somebody has told me to lie low and WAIT for 10 days or so, to see whether the craparola will lie down (settle).

1. Did they remove the old shingles?

A 1 yr guarantee? is that for the installation or the shingles?

3. OK. I would wait and see if they lay flat after a day or two...

under a hot sun. The 3 in 1 shingles usually lay pretty flat after installation but I've seen the interlocking type look like they are bubbled up after they are installed. If you're not happy though, call the contractor back.

I should mention I'm an electrician and not a roofer.

4. Not a roofer, but an appraiser who deals with roofs and roofers and things.

Give it time, especially if it is not a 3D job, and is just typical shingling. Bumps will happen and then calm down. Your concerns will be flashing work and the like. I'm sure it will be fine.

6. Asphalt shingles? Didn't know they still installed them, but

my fiberglass-look-like-asphalt dimensional shingles took a few weeks to flatten out because they were installed in cool weather. The roofer warned us that they'd uncurl faster on the faces with strong sun.


Roofers ARE fast. I watched ours install the whole shebang including a new deck --they were careful but speedy.

Totally OT, but I grew up in a house with asphalt shingle siding as well as roofing.

8. I just had my roof done. The roofer said I got his famous "tail light guarantee".

Why was he laughing as he drove away?

9. Day 2 answer: DUers were correct

I woke up ready either to breathe fire on the roofer or crumple up in a fetus position. Well, the shingles were lying flat, so you kind posters were correct that they needed some settling time.

To seal the deal officially, I called the roofer (who apparently never expected to hear from me again), and asked whether the wrinkling is normal (and now be gone, for now). He acted like this was the dumbest, most shocking question he had ever heard and barked, "Of course it is!1 It will happen until they heat up with the sun and stick."


O.K., fine!1 and exCUSE me!1 He didn't seem so bright yesterday when I told him the price increase he referred to was because the asphalt comes from OIL and the price of OIL has ripped. I mean, he didn't appear to get the oil connection.

He had commented that the 20-yr type's price was now what the 30-yr's price was just a few weeks ago. DUers had posted this price thing weeks ago.

10. Our area by hail recently. I really think this is a case for Gov. intervention in the mkt

I got to thinking about all the waste (and oil), involved in making and transporting and landfilling all the old and new shingles being removed/replaced.

It seems CRAZY that there is not more effort to force, or at least fiscally encourage, people to only use hail resistant shingles on their new roof. For one thing, they don't cost THAT much more, and for another, the true cost of manufacturing them is probably not more than 5% higher, so as more people use them, the cost could come down.

But the savings, to the environment now, and to the homeowner/insurance companies in the future, would be very large.


A 35 year roof should last 35 years.
