You know what food freaks me out?
Instant mashed potatoes. Heat up milk and water in the microwave, stir in the dried flakes and PRESTO... mashed potatoes. It's like magic.

P.S. In my defense, I had my wisdom teeth out a week ago (with all the complications after that they tell you are so rare...my ass) and all I'm eating is Cream of Wheat and mashed potatoes.

1. Do you doctor them up?
There are so many tasty add ins available like cheese, or bacon, or sour cream, or salsa, or gravy. Are you a butter purist?

4. Nope.
I don't think I've ever had instant mashed potatoes before this sore tooth episode. Course, knowing my Mom she probably served them to us and we never knew the difference....LOL

I would like to know how to make Horseradish mashed potatoes though....yummy.

21. If you have a garlic press, squeeze at least one clove of garlic into
your instant mashed potatoes. Garlic is not only tasty, but it is said to have healing properties.

26. I suspect so, but a press would make it smoother. Fresh is usually
superior. Minced might be a tad lumpy right now.

Love some hash and a couple of over easy eggs all mushed up together.

5. did they give you a guestimate for recovery time?
I need mine out, but I honestly have no idea when I'll have time to sit around, eat soup, and take drugs - I could have done it any time in the last month, but medical details (especially payment) and free time don't always line up.

8. Don't believe them no matter what they tell you about recovery..LOL
I broke one about a year ago and it didn't start to bother me until a couple months ago. I decided to get them all out at the same time. BIG MISTAKE. The older you get the more prone you are to complications because the tooth becomes more embedded in the bone.

So....I had it done the 18th. Was pretty out of it the rest of the day, kept ice on my face. By Sunday I was in agony. For the first time in my life I had the cold sweats. Downing 2 Darvocet managed to buy me 1 fuckin' hour of sleep. Turns out I got dry socket in both lower extraction areas, had more soreness because one of the teeth broke while it was being pulled....AND...as a bonus, the upper tooth must have been too close to my sinuses because now every time I take a deep breath with my mouth closed I get shooting pains up my face to my eyes. It's been miserable.

Oh, and the best part. Both lower sockets are packed with this medicated gauze that has a clove taste. Not a good clove taste, but very powerful. So everything I eat or drink has a clove taste to it. Sigh.

18. ugh!
I guess I should have had mine out when I was 18, as people suggested. I've just never been one to understand elective surgery - I think it should be a last resort. Well, now I have tinnitus, that I'm pretty sure is caused by my teeth/jaw, and periodic head-aches from my teeth pushing around. sucks. I hope doctors will actually be able to tell me if having the wisdom teeth out will fix these problems, instead of just telling me that I should have them out because it's the thing to do. I'll be 30 this year, and they're still growing in. One just made the brave push through the gum this past year.

19. You'd probably have an easier time.
I'm 42 (but obviously a late bloomer...I had chicken pox when I was 37). None of mine were impacted which can make it more painful. 30 seems late to have them just coming out. Hopefully your dentist can tell you whether or not your teeth are the cause of the other symptoms. I had to go to an oral surgeon to get mine out because of the embedded roots thingy, but I guess some dentists do the easier extractions by themselves.

11. Kiwi fruit freak me out--my husband can eat'em skin and all.
So help me, I've seen him do that. I can not deal with hairy fruit. Fuzzy fruit like peaches--okay. Hairy--I pass.

When I had my wisdom teeth out like, (ack--nearly twenty years ago?) I was all about the tapioca. Oh, I had yogurt and rice pudding, but there was something about tapioca that just satisfied. Even though the little grainy bits got between my cheeks and sore gums at times--but nonetheless. Love the tapioca. Mashed potatoes--not so much, but if I had the right gravy (mmmmm Popeye's mashed potatoes and gravy....) I'd have been in heaven.

Now I want mashed potatoes and gravy. Damnit.

12. My brother and I used to have fights over mashed potatoes
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 11:18 PM by nuxvomica
He always wanted my mom to make instant and I always wanted homemade. That was when I was a kid. As an adult I've had arguments with my sister over mashed potatoes. She uses whole milk and lots of butter and tries to make them as smooth as possible. I like it with a little skim milk and big chunks of potato. I don't see why it was ever such a big deal with those two.
A very right-wing friend I haven't heard from in a while adds mayonnaise, which is not such a bad idea, despite his politics.

I just can't imagine that. I've never made mashed potatoes from scratch, but I prefer my taters to be smooth and not lumpy. Not that I can remember ever eating lumpy mashed potatoes...LOL

I've heard it described as very-over-salted mildly-gritty gelatinous egg whites. That was enough to convince me to never try it.

Hell, I've never made real mashed potatoes in my life. However, I found these instant ones had a really good flavor. Maybe it depends on the brand. Just add a little butter and salt....yum. Plus, I got tired of eating cream of wheat for breakfast and dinner.

Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 09:09 AM by Nevilledog
I'll have to pay attention the next time I eat a banana and see if it gets bigger...that's too funny.

Totally off topic Maddy....but there was a guy who was a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance this year, a guy named Thayne, who had this really sickening smile. I told my hubby...wait, I've seen that smile before. I figured out his smile looked exactly like your frog. I dragged him in to look at it and he agreed...LOL

38. No, not a bad experience.
I eat meat, pork, chicken...but for the most part none of what I eat looks like the actual animal.

But with seafood, a lot of times, the food looks like the animal and it grosses me out. Plus, it smells bad.

It's just a little quirk that I have.

And I would never eat a fish with it's head on. That freaks me out. Or a pig. I like to be a little more separated from my food's original shape.
