Rhode Island DUI suspect blows a .491
:wow:

Just how much does a person have to drink to blow that?

BY VINAYA SAKSENA

LINCOLN — A North Providence man was arraigned Tuesday on charges stemming from an accident he allegedly caused while driving with what the State Police say is the highest blood alcohol count in the agency’s history.

According to information released by the State Police, 34-year-old Stanley Kobierowski of 29 Campbell Avenue, North Providence, was arrested in Providence on Monday, July 21, after police responded to an accident on Route 95 at approximately 11:51 p.m. He was arraigned the following day on charges of driving while intoxicated, BAC of 0.15 or greater and resisting arrest, and was then released on $1,000 personal recognizance, according to State Police Major Steven G. O’Donnell. His BAC readings were 0.489 and 0.491, the State Police said.

3. Is s/he actually still alive?
At that level, chances a person will die as the result of alcohol poisoning alone are high.

10. A doctor once told me they had a guy in the ER
who had a BAC of over .40. He said sometimes really advanced alcoholics can drink A LOT and still live. They develop a tolerance for it, apparently.

17. That's what I've heard.
Those who don't drink, or only drink moderately would die if they had a BAC of .40+. To survive, you pretty much have to be drinking heavily almost non-stop for quite a while.

Sobering up will be the dangerous part for him - he's gonna have a hell of a case of the DT's.

12. Here is a roundabout calculator.
Requires a little less for a light woman than a larger man due to body fat content, etc. If people blow above a .3, they are at serious risk of alcohol poisoning. Needless to say, no matter what your weight, a .491 would be caused by quite a few, and the drinker had to have a SERIOUS tolerance to even get to that point without dying.

22. As a result of a DUI I got a couple of years ago
I had to go to group treatement, among many other things. Apparently people who have been drinking for years can get BAC's like this quite easy, and not appear to be all that drunk either. The counselor said they called it the 4-0 club.

24. That does not sound right. He probably "blew" a 49 meaning that
his blood alcohol level was .491 which basically means that his blood was Half alcohol.

.500 would be absolutely half.

This is my understanding of how the numbers correspond.

26. No.
The number is a percent. It means .491% of the blood, not .491 of the blood. A 1.0 would mean 1.0%, or 1/100, of the blood. .491% means .00491 of the blood, almost 1/200, not almost 1/2.

30. Actually, the 0.491 is a percentage. In other words there is
a concentration of 0.491 alcohol per 100. (i.e. a half percent is enough to kill you)

He was in bad shape, however he wasn't driving he asked for a ride home and as much as that guy partied that was rare for him to ask someone to take home, actually that was the only time I 'm aware of.
